Managing Director & Head of Credit Research

 

The Managing Director, Head of Credit Research will be responsible for leading Schwab Asset Management’s (SAM) credit risk management function through identifying, modeling, measuring, and monitoring municipal and taxable credit and portfolio risks. The Managing Director will lead teams responsible for developing credit risk policies, models and utilizing tools to measure credit risk accurately from various perspectives; observe and analyze credit risk measures on a regular and timely basis; ensure the portfolio management process is aligned with expectations of credit risks and credit risk tolerances; and evaluate the results of proposed security selection adjustments and strategies.

 

Key Outcomes:

Manage and lead multi location-based Research groups and set policies for analyzing the risk and potential investments made by SAM’s portfolio management team.Monitor existing exposure and, through detailed analysis, evaluates and assesses potential investments for inclusion in the various portfolios.Maintain exposure limits, and evaluate credit developments, ratings changes and news events affecting the investments made by the Schwab Money Market funds, Mutual Funds, ETFs, and Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs) advised by SAM.Conduct credit analysis and make security credit assessment for money market, mutual funds, ETFs, and SMAs.Monitor holdings for credit quality and adherence to regulatory requirements.Work with portfolio managers in assessing risk profile for security selection and disposition and analyzing the economy and financial markets.Serve as a spokesperson for SAM’s credit risk management process, interacting with clients and other constituents to speak to the firm’s credit risk processes and procedures, including the Schwab Fund Board and other firm-wide committeesOversee the credit risk team’s adherence to the agreed upon policies and procedures established by SAM and make recommendations for modifications, as needed by industry and/or regulatory changes.Anticipate changes and monitor industry and economic trends and sources of risk; assess their impact on the funds; consider alternatives; and independently make decisions to ensure the best possible investment performance.Communicate and interact with senior executives across Schwab including those in compliance, legal, and investment management services, regarding the funds’ strategies and performance, financial markets, risk management, and other investment matters, as well as provide perspective and advice on implications for SAM.Lead related external communications, including speaking occasionally at industry/client events and with the media, representing Schwab’s views on credit risk management issues. What you have

Required Experience:

10+ years experience leading/managing credit risk in environments of similar scale and complexityExperience and understanding of credit risk frameworks, processes, and vendors.Relevant experience helping to build credit risk infrastructure and systems.Knowledge and experience with the broad set of credit and investment risks pertinent to fixed income markets, including municipal marketsExperience leading and developing high-performing, engaged teams of credit risk management professionals.Appreciation of the full spectrum of credit risks and regulatory issues pertaining to fixed incomeAn undergraduate degree is required; strong preferences for an MBA or CFA
