Job Purpose/Summary:
The Manager Industrial Design will organize, plan, manage, and execute packaging Innovation, development, and concepts for Retail, Club, Fresh Meats, Poultry, Foodservice, and international businesses. The Manager will lead research, design, testing, justification, and deployment of new package technology to deliver new or improved packaged products. This individual will lead project teams to investigate and recommend materials, processes, innovation, packaging, and equipment to bring an assigned project to a successful conclusion. Additionally, they will provide technical support to Product Development, Business Units (BU), Supply Chain, and Procurement in technical expertise. They will deliver visuals and provide prototypes throughout various stages of packaging development and support the requests from Product/Packaging Development and Business Units (BU). The individual in this role will also support Supply Chain and BU function in creating structural packages that meet customer and consumer expectations for character, cost, and quality in assigned product categories. The Manager has demonstrated the ability to manage/recommend projects that will lead to innovation, growth, sustainability, intellectual property, and profitability opportunities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Partner with assigned Business Unit with all package design needs
• Leads multiple packaging design and development programs.
• Leads assigned resources in problem identification and problem resolution to facilitate new or improved packages, and packaging upgrades
• Leads the development of technological innovation in equipment, materials, processing, or package design, including packaging development specifications.
• Supports the development of intellectual property for new package platforms/designs when applicable
• A cross-functional partner with Business Units, Insights/Innovation, Supply Chain Engineering, Product Development R&D, and Procurement to develop new packaging platforms to support product innovation
• Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with operations/divisional management and external customers.
• Develop partnerships with suppliers to create new and unique packages
• Responsible for assuring all projects are seen through to completion, including documentation and intellectual property protection.
• Supports the establishment and execution of departmental priorities and program strategy efforts in conjunction with the department Director and/or VP.
• Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with operations/divisional management and external customers.
• Leverages external vendors and works directly with procurement.
• Provide design support to project teams to solve manufacturing problems.
• Serve as a design resource to the organization.
• Proficient in die-line creation
• Mentor to the interns of the Packaging Department.
• Develops self and others utilizing the Tyson Right Behaviors.
• Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Education / Certifications: BS/MS Packaging Science, Industrial Design, Graphic Design or related field preferred.
Experience: +6 years’ relative work experience required. 4 years in an advanced technical position working with cross-functional teams and packaging suppliers preferred. Previous experience with Fresh and Further Processed packaged meat a plus. Proficient in Industrial Design. Demonstrates effectiveness in managing/recommending projects that will lead to opportunities in innovation, growth, intellectual property, and profitability.
Design Skills (some combination of the following): Hand sketching ability, Model making ability, Understanding and use of Solid Works, AutoCAD, ESKO software design tools, and Adobe Suite. Ability to use their skills to solve specific communication problems and meet client needs through visual solutions. Experience in the Graphics Arts industry preferred. In-depth knowledge of pre-media and print production is a plus. Technical skills to operate and maintain large format printers, Kongsberg cutting table, and other packaging lab equipment.
Communication Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills required. Presentation skills required. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with cross functional business partners
Computer Skills: Requires basic computer skills. For example, generating simple letters, spreadsheets and creating simple queries. May require knowledge of Tyson Business Computer. Familiarity with Cape, Tops, ArtiosCad, CAD, etc. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Strong project management skills. Strong planning and organizational skills.
Supervisory: No direct / indirect reports. Mentor to Interns of the Packaging Department.
