POSITION SUMMARY:

The Manager of Special Effects will lead the Special Effects team and establish safe and consistent operations of all systems. Train the Special Effects team and manage the day-to-day operations of the department.  Ensure the proper operations and management of all systems/areas of responsibility assigned to him/her with focus in support of all other operating departments, provide services as required to the entire operations, and ensure all maintenance are carried out accordingly so as to maintain the freshness and efficiency of all equipment. Manager of Special Effects shall have technical and management background on Cryogenics and Low Fog, Compressed Air Systems, Specific Fountains Systems and Smoke and Haze Machines.  Also responsible for the maintenance of the integrated electrical/mechanical special effects systems and underwater scenic elements. The Special Effects Manager will lead and direct the Assistant Head and the rest of the Special Effects department to achieve common goals and maintain the strategy of a safe working environment at all times. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for managing/ supervising/ overseeing the daily Special Effects works activities in House of Dancing Water (HODW)Promote and update departmental and company standard operating procedures in order to maintain the safe and consistent operations of all Special EffectsEstablish emergency procedures for show systems with Stage Management and the technical team; assure all Special Effects staff are trained and familiar with these procedures.Establish and maintain training and backup plans to assure continuity in performance operations.Oversee, Organize, plan and delegate with his Assistant Manager and Leads to produce training sessions, tasks list and projects within the department scope of work in regard to maintenance or show.Coordinate with other departments and Artistic, as needed to run shows, rehearsals and performer trainings.Produce and manage the department’s yearly budgets and capital expense projections.Provide cost effective solutions to Special Effects issues that maintain show quality and maximize return on investment.Document, monitor and update Special Effects equipment installation specifications, inventory of Special Effects equipment and inspection and maintenance records.Maintain the highest possible level of knowledge and awareness for company and safety policies.Develop and oversee a regular and long-term supervision and maintenance schedule and procedures plan for all Special Effects equipment.  Participate in such inspections regularly.Prepare a safety guide for all fluid system operations and document all operations as part of a permanent record. Manage and monitor HODW specific pool electrical design used within the Fountain system of the Theatre.Work with third parties when needed regarding general safety and specifically the Theatre fountains electrical system.Communicate and coordinate with system manufacturers for system updates and repairs.Support the performers at all times by assisting and guiding their interaction with all special effect show elements.Adhere to all company policies and procedures.Report accidents, injuries and unsafe work conditions to superiors and relevant departmentsPerform other reasonable job duties as assigned by Director and Assistant Director from time to time

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:  

Experience with a wide variety of Special Effects systems as it pertains to installation, use, and troubleshooting.Willing to learn but with a good knowledge and understanding of Electrical SystemsFamiliarity with industrial type systems like Electrical, PLC control, Pneumatics, Hydraulics…Knowledge and practice of safety procedures3 years of experience troubleshooting and/or maintaining large-scale theatrical special effects systems.

Education: 

Technical education or wide experience in the entertainment special effects fieldAn electrical or mechanical engineering qualification or relevant years of related experience.

Skills/Competencies :  

Willingness and ability to be Scuba certified and work in a water environmentAbility to learn or update lifesaving skills and to become CPR/First Responder trained.Must possess problem solving skills and strong interpersonal skills with proven talents in leadership, safety, and teamwork.Good command in both written and spoken EnglishCantonese speaking is an asset.Working knowledge in computer skills and use of all MS Office applications, including Outlook and PowerPoint presentationGood leadership and able to make sound decision and perform other duties as and when required very last minute and at time of emergencyHands-on and possess good problem solving skills and attend to detailsIndependent and able to work with minimal supervisionFrequently/Occasional ascending or descending ladders and/or ramps and ability to work in high rise siteAbility to work under pressure and meet deadlinesAbility to work on flexible shift including overnight, weekends and holiday on rotation basisAbility to work on overtime when neededGood health, physically fit and excellence in personal grooming and presentationWillingness and ability to be Scuba certified and work in a water environmentPADI Dive Certification or desire and ability to learn to dive.
