Job Title: Mainframe Support Analyst
Location: Reston, VA – REMOTE (Local to DMV only) – candidates will report onsite quarterly
Schedule: Sunday – Thursday (8-hour shifts within 6 AM – 6 PM)
Role Type: 6 + months contract
Position Summary:
We are seeking a proactive Tier 1 Support Analyst to monitor and support Mainframe and Java/J2EE-based distributed systems in a production environment. This role is focused on ensuring the health and availability of critical systems, identifying potential issues early, and escalating to Level 2 teams as needed—no development required.
This is a great fit for someone who enjoys hands-on monitoring, has a strong background in enterprise-level operations, and is capable of multi-tasking across monitoring tools, email alerts, and phone communications.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Monitor production systems (Mainframe & Distributed/Java J2EE) using runbooks and standard procedures.
+ Respond to alerts and incidents within your 8-hour shift (not on-call).
+ Escalate application or infrastructure issues to Level 2 support teams.
+ Collaborate with vendors for mainframe support issues.
+ Coordinate and participate in technical bridge calls.
+ Manage incoming calls from internal teams and clients during the shift.
+ Multi-task across dashboards, email alerts, and real-time support calls.
+ Update documentation and shift summaries as needed.
Preferred Experience & Skills:
+ Minimum of 5+ years of experience in IT operations, system monitoring, or Tier 1/2 support.
+ Hands-on experience with Mainframe (z/OS) and Java/J2EE environments.
+ Familiarity with job schedulers (e.g., Control-M, CA7) is a plus.
+ Comfortable navigating systems using basic Linux/UNIX and Windows commands.
+ Strong incident response, troubleshooting, and escalation skills.
+ Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, production-critical environment.
+ Excellent communication and documentation skills.
Nice to Have:
+ Experience with mainframe tools such as:
CA7, JCL, ISPF, JES2, TSO, REXX, FTP, DFHSM, TPX, CLIST
+ Familiarity with distributed system utilities and performance tools like:
NDM, DB2 (basic), CICS, Tivoli, TMON, OPS/MVS, SAR, NET MON
+ Exposure to job scheduling tools (e.g., Control-M, CA7).
+ Knowledge of system monitoring practices and escalation procedures.
+ Experience using Visio, MVS Utilities, and other documentation tools is a plus
