Job Responsibilities:

JOB SUMMARY:

The Mold Maker Journeyman at Magna Engineered Glass is responsible for the construction, repair, and preventive maintenance of injection molds, utilizing engineering drawings, prints, and sketches. This role also includes precision machining and assembly of prototypes, tooling, fixtures, and gauges to support production and engineering needs.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs complex and precise welding repairs, color matching, re-spotting, engineering changes, insert replacements, hand benching, peening, texturing, polishing, and glass spotting, maintaining tolerances as close as ±0.0001 inch.Conducts comprehensive preventive maintenance on injection molds, including disassembly, inspection, and replacement of components such as springs, ejector pins, hydraulic cylinders, and limit switches.Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals to accurately build, repair, or modify molds and tooling, with a solid understanding of sectional views and projections.Fabricates custom parts from sketches or specifications using various machine tools including lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and welders. Utilizes a full range of precision instruments, power tools, and testing equipment.Performs heat treating processes such as hardening, annealing, and drawing to achieve desired material properties.Operates a variety of equipment including CNC mills, boring mills, spotting presses, grinders, torches, and bench tools to support mold fabrication and repair.Executes detailed handwork on in-mold steel to form complex geometries and specialized shapes.Communicates regularly with suppliers and manufacturers regarding mold repair requirements, improvement opportunities, and logistics coordination.Provides design input to engineering teams, influencing mold features such as venting, core placement, gate design, and gate positioning for improved performance.Installs and troubleshoots mold-related electronics, pneumatic systems, and hydraulic components.Collaborates with team members to meet departmental objectives and provides technical support to production, engineering, and other plant departments.Actively maintains and enhances trade-related knowledge and skills through ongoing learning and practice.Maintains up-to-date proficiency in the use of tools, measuring equipment, testing instruments, and material handling systems.Operates company vehicles and material handling equipment as needed for mold transportation and support tasks.Accurately completes mold documentation, maintenance records, and other required paperwork.Maintains a clean, safe, and organized work environment in accordance with company safety and housekeeping standards.Assists in training and mentoring apprentices, supporting skill development and knowledge transfer.Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational goals. Actively contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment, demonstrating flexibility to adapt to evolving business needs and priorities.

REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or equivalent required.Successful completion of a U.S. Department of Labor-certified 5-year apprenticeship program in mold making or a related trade required. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver’s license and a powered industrial truck operator permit.Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing time and priorities effectively.Strong judgment, organizational skills, initiative, teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving abilities, with a high level of task ownership and follow-through.Physically capable of performing job functions, including bending, heavy lifting, reaching, and working in confined or restrictive environments.Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.Knowledge of safety standards and protocols in manufacturing environments.English proficiency required, with strong verbal and written communication skills. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Office Environment: 0%Plant Environment: 100%The employee must be able to tolerate standing for extended periods of time.  It requires (Near/Far/Depth/Color) vision in order to be able to tolerate the eye strain associated with working on a computer throughout the workday.Prolonged standing at least 8 hours, but up to 12 hours per dayLift objects weighing up to 35 pounds multiple times per hour.Repetitive use of hands, including gripping, grasping, pinching, squeezingWhile working in the Plant environment, the employee will be exposed to machinery, moving equipment and material, moderate noise, airborne particles, fumes, and various levels of temperature created by the manufacturing process.This role operates primarily in manufacturing facility.
