Purpose:
Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization. This individual placement is in partnership with the National Park Service and is an AmeriCorps Position. SECC empowers young adults to cultivate compassion, responsibility, and grit through community service, and environmental stewardship. SECC selects young adults, to complete conservation projects on public lands throughout the Southeast. SECC programs encourage environmental stewardship, foster community partnerships, and emphasize experiential learning.
The Chattanooga Audubon Society's mission is to preserve and protect our environmental, cultural, and historical resources through programming, education, and stewardship. The Chattanooga Audubon Society owns over 500 acres of nature sanctuaries in Hamilton County, TN.
The island is beloved by many residents of the Chattanooga area and by visitors. We aim to make the island a thriving habitat for the native flora and fauna of our region. With improvements, this will not just be a place for quiet recreation, but also an educational destination for students of all ages.
Position Overview:
The goals of this project are to: remove invasive plants from the island, clear trails, create fence lines for goat enclosure (goats need to be moved every month), plant native trees and shrubs, and rehabilitate select structures (e.g. bunk house, bird blind), plant native species to provide food sources for birds and animals; these plantings can also help to mitigate the erosion occurring on the island.

United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alienAt least 18 years of ageHas received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent before using the education awardAgrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History CheckTransportation:
A personal vehicle is required to make it to and from the reporting location. Members will be taking the boat to and from the island every day.
Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:
Typically, this position is expected to serve 8 am until 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week – but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards service. Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
Member will receive an orientation for SECC.Trainings offered by the Audubon Society
