Summary THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a MACHINIST (Title 32), Position Description Number D1493000 and is part of the IL 182 AW, National Guard. Responsibilities As a MACHINIST (Title 32), WG-3414-12, you will serve as Shop Chief over a small organizational segment in a maintenance function with responsibility for the overall shop operation. Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list: Plan and lay out work to be accomplished in the shop which is then completed by the technician and lower graded machinist(s). Independently determine appropriate maintenance procedures. Perform the full range of shop work. Provide recommendations and input to supervisor concerning personnel actions such as performance appraisals, awards, position description changes, disciplinary actions, and leave. Determine approaches, methods, and courses of action required to accomplish the mission of the shop in an effective and efficient manner. Devise and maintain plans and records. Plan and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets, and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information. Estimate time, equipment, and material requirements. Prepare for and participate in various types of readiness evaluations, inspections, mobilization, and command support exercises. Perform additional duties such as fire/crash/rescue duty, snow removal, munitions handling, or civil emergency response. Implement safety regulatory requirements. Ensure that other workers in the shop wear appropriate safety equipment and follow pertinent safety precautions. Apply shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces. Locate and mark surfaces and angles to be machined. Perform the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments. Set up and operate CNC machine tools. Program machining operations for complex or precision cuts. Requirements Conditions of Employment IAW The Fair Chance Act, Agency employees may not request criminal history information at the point of initial application, upon receipt of an application, or prior to, during or after a job interview. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in the Illinois National Guard and in the military grade listed in the announcement. Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service. Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation. May be required to successfully complete a trial period. This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position. Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day. Indefinite position/temporary promotion/may become permanent. May be required to travel by car, in military and/or commercial aircraft, and by other means of transportation as appropriate, to perform temporary duty assignments. The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required for the position. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. Qualifications AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of consideration for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code § 709), will be in the following manner and sequence: The FIRST area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG. The SECOND area of consideration will be all current Federal Employees. The THIRD area of consideration will be all Federal re-employment eligible. The FOURTH area of consideration will be applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and gain ILNG membership. The FIFTH area of consideration will U.S. Citizens. Military Grades: Enlisted Only - Minimum rank requirement of TSgt and May not exceed the rank of MSgt. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-12 Level, which includes Must possess experience or training performing the full range of machining operations on most types of conventional or CNC machine tools and their various attachments. Experience or training in planning and lay out work from blueprints, worksheets and other drawings that may have missing or incorrect information. Skill in applying shop mathematics in establishing needed dimensions, such as those required for chasing threads or machining angular surfaces; locating and marking surfaces and angles to be machined. Skill in programming machining operations, setting up and operating CNC machine tools. Knowledge of and ability to apply advanced shop mathematics such as geometric and trigonometric formulas to make computation for laying out work, machining pieces at unusual or compound angles, determining gear ratios pitch, angles and other similar exact or precision dimension. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
