### **About the Role** Uber’s Localization Team is seeking a **Localization Operations Manager** with extensive experience in **Machine Learning (ML) Program Management** to support the growth and evolution of our global localization capabilities. In this high-impact and strategic role, you will lead the vision, development, and execution of Uber’s **Machine Translation (MT)** and **Large Language Model (LLM)** programs. You will play a key role in enhancing translation quality, scalability, and cost-effectiveness by evaluating and integrating state-of-the-art ML solutions tailored to the diverse linguistic and cultural needs of Uber’s global customer base. You’ll work at the intersection of AI, language, and operations—partnering with cross-functional teams to ensure that our ML-driven localization efforts align with business priorities and deliver measurable impact. **What the Candidate Will Do:** - **Program Development and Execution**: Design and implement comprehensive MT and LLM programs that support both Uber’s internal operations and external clients, ensuring alignment with our global communication and localization strategies. - **Integration and Technical Liaison**: Build seamless integration points between Uber’s internal services and tools, connecting them to our MT/LLM pipeline. Serve as a technical liaison for internal stakeholders and external clients—gathering requirements, identifying integration opportunities, and optimizing the pipeline for efficiency and utility. - **Best Practices and Guidelines**: Establish and maintain best practices for MT-only and MT+LLM use cases across all client engagements. Ensure consistency, quality, and operational efficiency throughout the localization lifecycle. - **Model Selection and Evaluation**: Partner with the Localization Operations (LocOps) and Language Model Engineering teams to select, evaluate, train, and deploy the most effective MT and LLM models. Aim to enhance both internal productivity and external localization outcomes. - **Support and Training**: Respond to and fulfill team member requests related to MT and LLM programs. Provide support and training as needed to ensure effective adoption and usage of these technologies across the organization. - **Stakeholder Management**: Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders who rely on MT and/or LLM for translation. Monitor translation quality and impact, and use feedback loops to drive continuous improvement in service delivery. - **Cross-Functional Leadership**: Lead cross-functional initiatives and engage with internal localization teams and external partners. This includes gathering requirements, drafting product requirement documents (PRDs), and managing the execution of tool enhancements and process improvements. - **Data Analysis and Dashboard Development**: Collaborate with data analysts and engineers to create a user-friendly dashboard that provides actionable insights into MT/LLM performance. This tool will empower clients to make data-driven decisions and refine their localization strategies. **Basic Qualifications:** - **4+ years of program management experience** in machine learning, NLP, or localization technology domains - **Strong understanding of Machine Translation (MT) and Large Language Models (LLMs)**—including their capabilities, limitations, and integration patterns - **Experience managing cross-functional AI/ML initiatives**, especially involving engineering, product, and vendor teams - Hands-on familiarity with **MLOps or LLMOps practices**, such as model lifecycle management, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring - Proven ability to **translate business needs into technical requirements**, especially for global content and localization workflows - Excellent **communication and stakeholder management skills**, including experience working with external clients or partners - Comfortable working in **fast-paced, ambiguous environments** with shifting priorities and distributed teams - Bachelor’s degree in **Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Program Management, or related field** (or equivalent work experience) **Preferred Qualifications:** - **Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD)** in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field - Experience deploying or fine-tuning **LLMs or MT models** (e.g., OpenNMT, Marian, BLOOM, GPT, Mistral, T5, etc.) in production environments - Familiarity with **localization tools and platforms** (e.g., Lokalise, Phrase, Crowdin, SDL Trados, uLabel, etc.) and quality frameworks like MQM or tRanking - Experience leading **multi-market or multilingual AI programs**, especially in highly regulated or sensitive domains (e.g., content moderation, compliance) - Understanding of **data privacy, redaction layers, and secure model access** in enterprise GenAI environments - Ability to evaluate and optimize **AI-assisted translation workflows**, including human-in-the-loop systems and quality evaluation pipelines - Demonstrated success in scaling **vendor engagement**, resource strategy, or cost optimization in a localization tech stack - Strong technical literacy—comfortable reviewing architecture diagrams, ML pipelines, or API documentation and providing structured feedback For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$133,000 per year - USD$148,000 per year.
