Brief Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Livestock Operations Manager, Livestock Health Coordinator has responsibilities for daily animal care and maintenance of facilities and equipment for the beef cattle research program at Northern Agricultural Research Center. The person in this position will be expected to participate in all aspects of the Livestock Department of Northern Ag Research Center. The individual hired for this position will have demonstrated the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and the public and will have demonstrated the ability to represent MSU in a productive, professional and courteous manner. This person will have daily contact with local faculty animal scientists and co-workers and various contacts with agricultural producers, MSU faculty, students, professionals and cooperators. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to accurately follow and explain instructions to individuals, co-workers, and supervisors both internal and external to the organization.

General Statement
The Montana State University Agricultural Experiment Station’s mission as established in 1893 by state statute is “to conduct and promote studies, scientific investigations and experiments relating to agriculture, natural resources and rural life and to diffuse information thereby acquired among the people of Montana.” Thus, the station fulfills the agricultural research component of Montana State University’s federal Land Grant University mission of teaching, research, and extension. The Northern Agricultural Research Center near Havre is a part of the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station, headquartered at Montana State University. The center was established in 1915 on the site of what was once Fort Assinniboine, a military post established in the 1880’s. The goal of its researchers is to serve Montana farmers and ranchers by seeking more profitable ways to produce, market and use agricultural products.
Duties and Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
+ Be the lead worker for livestock health related activities, collecting data & participate in all cattle operations including but not limited to calving, breeding, weaning, pasture moves, fence and corral maintenance, doctoring, and AACUC guidelines at MSU facilities while practicing low stress livestock handling techniques.
+ Utilize horses for data collection and livestock management, plus maintain horses for other researchers.
+ Assist livestock and farm operations managers to plan, execute, and perform safety meetings for all livestock operations employees on a regular basis.
+ Train and supervise other employees and, in the absence of the livestock operations manager, make independent decisions regarding herd health.
+ Perform farm and ranch labor support for the research programs, including routine livestock management procedures without direct supervision.
+ Participate in feedstuff production, seeding, spraying, irrigating, and harvesting both irrigated and dryland hay.
+ Observe, assist, collect and record data daily which includes weighing calves, tagging, recording all information, moving to designated pasture, day to day animal health, well-being and keeping accurate pasture inventories.
+ Assist in breeding protocols and artificial insemination of livestock herd.
+ Assist with Calving and Feedlot coordinator duties as the need arises.
+ Participate in livestock facility operations, maintenance, and improvements.
+ In collaboration with Operations Managers and Mechanic, assist with shop direction & organization, repair of research equipment and operate and perform daily maintenance of all haying, farming/ranching and heavy equipment at NARC .
+ Assist and coordinate with all research projects as the need arises.
+ Assist with ground maintenance (mowing spraying, plowing snow) as the need arises.
+ Ability to diagnose and treat diseases and sickness in cattle.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ A.S. in agriculture or a similar relevant field of study, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Experience in beef cattle operations and in beef quality assurance, feedlot enterprises, cow/calf operations and low stress cattle handling techniques.
+ Experience in calving, both in confined and range settings.
+ Experience in identifying and treating sick livestock.
+ Experience feeding livestock in a feedlot or range setting.
+ Experience with both dryland and irrigated hay, small grain, corn silage and forage production.
+ Experience in operation and maintenance of agricultural equipment.
+ Experience in livestock facility maintenance.
+ Demonstrated competence in collecting and recording data and maintaining detailed records.
+ Computer experience which includes e-mail and Microsoft Software package (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
+ B.S. in agriculture or similar relevant field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Beef cattle research experience.
+ Livestock husbandry and veterinary skills.
+ Experience in and understanding effective horsemanship around livestock.
+ Exposure to Artificial Insemination and estrous synchronization techniques.
+ Experience supervising and training student help or short-term hires.

Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
+ Must possess a valid driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver’s license, must obtain a valid Montana driver’s license within 60 days of hire.)
+ Must have or be able to obtain a research and demonstration pesticide license for agricultural plant pests and vertebrate classifications within six months of hire.
+ Must have or be able to obtain both BQA certifications as well as CITI Training for research settings.

Physical Demands
+ Working in extreme temperatures and inclement weather conditions.
+ Working with and around pesticides and dust-borne particles.
+ Working with and around hazardous machinery that is extremely loud.
+ Handling and working with unpredictable livestock that can cause serious injury.
+ Position requires moving and lifting parts, equipment, and livestock weighing up to 150 lbs.
+ Working in elevated positions (example: 90 elevator legs or large grain bins).
+ Working livestock while on horseback and having the ability to handle horses in and around all ranch environments.
