The Litigation Attorney manages and advises on all aspects of non-Labor legal disputes impacting the Company. This role partners with various Teams to handle proactive legal risk management, including support for Commercial initiatives, policy re-writes and antitrust counseling. The Litigation Attorney is a detail-oriented thinker and strong communicator, who is ready to drive the future of Southwest Airlines.

ResponsibilitiesProvides legal counsel, guidance, and training regarding applicable laws, regulations, and policies to multiple departments within the CompanyWorks collaboratively with other Southwest attorneys and departments to address and resolve business disputes while considering both the legal requirements and the business objectives (e.g., Customer complaints/claims, regulatory compliance issues, corporate communications, and commercial transactions and contract issues)Handles a broad portfolio of litigation and pre-litigation matters in collaboration with outside counsel and appropriate Southwest departments (e.g., class action litigation, complex commercial litigation, insured litigation, employment litigation, and administrative matters), including e-discovery and document preservation, case discovery, motion practice, witness preparation, trial and appellate strategies, and settlement discussions, mediation, and settlement agreementsHelps to research applicable laws and respond to subpoenas, Civil Investigative Demands, and other requests for Southwest records or witnessesApproaches all aspects of litigation proactively, strategically, cost-effectively, and in a manner consistent with Southwest’s Culture and business philosophy, including when managing outside counsel relationships (e.g., when selecting and retaining outside counsel and vendors, managing case staffing, budget, and billing, and determining case strategy, etc.)May be required to perform other job duties as directed by Employee's LeadersKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesSkilled in written and oral communication, ability to work effectively with all levels of Southwest Employees, Southwest executives, clients, outside counsel, vendors, courts, and othersSkilled in interpersonal relationships, ability to work well with others as part of a teamAbility to perform well under pressureAbility to exercise judgment sufficient to handle and resolve issues related to sensitive and confidential legal mattersAbility and willingness to gain expertise and perform work in new areas of the lawAbility to be proactive, have excellent organizational skills, and perform efficiently and effectively on multiple projects under tight deadlinesEducationRequired: High School Diploma or GEDRequired: Bachelor’s DegreeRequired: Law degree from accredited schoolExperienceIntermediate level experience, expansive and far reaching knowledge as a licensed practicing attorney, with a practice focus on civil litigation in state and federal courts, with experience in all aspects of the litigation processPreferred: Experience with class action litigation (i.e. securities and consumer) Licensing/CertificationMust be a current member in good standing of a bar associationPhysical AbilitiesAbility to perform work duties from work station/desk/office area for extended periods of timeAbility to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the jobAbility to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the jobOther QualificationsMust maintain a well-groomed appearance per Company appearance standards as described in established guidelinesMust be a U.S. citizen or have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986Must be at least 18 years of ageMust be able to comply with Company attendance standards as described in established guidelinesMust be willing to travel when required for the jobMust be able to work flexible schedule to include non-business days and hours as needed to meet client needsPay & Benefits:
Competitive market salary from $166,280 per year to $180,120 per
year* depending on qualifications and experience. For eligible Leadership and individual
contributor roles, additional bonus opportunities are available and awarded at the
discretion of the company.
