We can train you in all the library specific knowledge needed to be successful in this position. The AIUS Weekend and Staff Supervisor is an entry level classified staff position intended to introduce the individual to all aspects of public service work in the library including work focused on circulation, building management, and student employee supervision. In the beginning, you will learn all aspects of general library public service operations. Then, over time, you will take on unique functional specialties within the department as needed and depending on your fit, skills, abilities, and interests.
Candidates for this position must have customer service and communication skills, flexibility, the ability to work as part of a team, and the ability to work solo as the only staff member in the building. (See specific hours of the position in the Special Requirements section for details about being the Weekend and Staff Supervisor.) Duties and Responsibilities Perform all the duties associated with opening and closing the library. The person in this position is the only staff member of the library present on Saturdays and early morning on Sundays, working with one or two student employees during this time. Supervise, train, and evaluate AIUS student employees and participate in their personal growth and development, including contributing to their semesterly performance reviews. Work at the Service Desk interacting with people in-person and on the phone to answer their questions, solve problems, explain policies, help them find information, check library materials in and out, and perform financial transactions. Help the Service Desk department to maintain building operations. This includes classroom and study space access and assistance, answering questions about public computing and printing and simple computing questions. Overall, ensuring an environment that allows all patrons to enjoy the building safely and comfortably. Other duties as assigned to assist in general library operations and fulfillment of AIUS mission, goals, and objectives. Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Two to three years of post-secondary education–or–experience in higher education either as a student or employee and experience working in a high-volume customer service position–or–an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Experience working in a customer service position. Previous experience with a variety of common computer and cloud-based software/apps. Experience with computers, mobile devices, printers, scanners, copiers, flash drives, common programs, and basic hardware troubleshooting. Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Previous experience working in a public or academic library, particularly in a public service role. The Successful Candidate Will Excellent communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both in customer service and in writing. Desire to learn new things, live with constant change, and proactively contribute to the growth of AIUS departmental services. Ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both in-person and in writing. Adaptability for working in a fast-paced environment during normal semesters, as well as very quiet periods during intersessions. Ability to adapt to organizational, procedural, policy, and technological changes. Ability to work in a team environment and develop and maintain productive collaborative relations. Position Special Requirements/Additional Information During regular semesters, the typical hours for this position are: Thursday to Monday 9am to 6pm (with 1 hour lunch) with Tuesday/Wednesday off OR Wednesday to Sunday 9am to 6pm (with 1 hour lunch) with Monday/Tuesday off The AIUS Department has a weekly staff meeting from 1-2 pm on Thursdays. The schedule for classified staff in the AIUS department changes during all intersessions and the summer due to shortened hours and library closing on weekends (about 11 weekends per year).The person in this role may need to work during their normal “off” days to work a full 40-hour work week (Monday to Friday) when the library is closed on weekends. All AIUS classified staff members may be required to flex their schedules to meet occasional vacation, sick leave, and other demands of the department.
