Manager & Counsel – Global Network Partnerships (North America):

Be part of an innovative legal team expanding the reach of the American Express Network!

We are seeking a Manager & Counsel to support the Global Network Partnerships (North America) team (GNP NA). The successful candidate will be responsible for negotiating commercial agreements and providing day-to-day legal advice in respect of relationships with third-party financial institutions, co-brands and other entities that participate in the American Express Network.

The position will report to a Director and Counsel in the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) of American Express.

GNP NA is part of the Global Merchant and Network Services organization at American Express. GMNS manages the American Express Network globally, including operating the company’s transaction processing platform, setting and enforcing the policies governing participation by card issuers and merchant acquirers on the network, and creating and managing network products that deliver value to various customers, including issuers, acquirers and technology partners.

Role & Responsibilities:

Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements in support of American Express Network card issuers, co-brand partners and other network participants.

Provide guidance and interpretation on existing agreements with GNP NA partners.

Prepare ongoing legal documentation, such as amendments and side letters.

Identify and advise on legal risk and develop mitigation strategies with relevant subject matter experts and stakeholders.

Collaborate across legal and enterprise teams (such as Compliance, Finance, and Control Management) and the GNP NA business, to ensure the most effective support, coordination, and expertise.     

Participate in a small team of seasoned attorneys, offering thought leadership for, and engagement on, cross-subject matter practice group issues and strategic projects.

Identify and support process improvements to promote agility in legal and related business operations, including contract template enhancements.

Minimum Qualifications:

J.D. with ability to practice law in New York.

3+ years of legal experience with emphasis on corporate/contract law required; background in technology or financial services law preferred.

Demonstrated competency in: (i) drafting agreements based on standardized templates; (ii) negotiating standard agreements with minimal supervision; (iii) providing practical, business-oriented advice and solutions; (iv) gaining credibility and developing strong working relationships with legal colleagues and business clients; (v) working well in cross-functional team settings; (vi) attention to detail; (vii) prioritization and handling of multiple tasks; (viii) working independently and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment; (ix) regular and prompt client interaction, and (x) organizing and keeping track of sensitive documents.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

 

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and strong work ethic.

Self-motivated, with a high level of personal energy and commitment.

Enthusiasm and interest in learning the dynamic American Express Network business.

Salary Range: $110,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
