PART TWO:FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Position Objective
*
The Lead Surgical Technologist is responsible to assist the daily operations of the surgical tech team, ensuring the sterile environment is maintained, and assisting the surgical team with high-quality support setting for and during procedures. This role includes mentoring and training staff, ensuring adherence to safety and regulatory standards, and collaborating with physicians, nurses, leaders, and other medical professionals to deliver optimal patient care. The Lead Surgical Technologist will also serve as a resource for troubleshooting and improving workflow efficiencies within the surgical and procedural setting while maintaining calm, focused environment during high- pressure situations.

* Serve as the Lead on daily shifts to resolve/answer any questions or issues. Teach both skill and theoretical principles to new employees and students
* Assists Perioperative Leaders to ensure unit compliance with quality, safety, regulatory requirements, and CMS standards
* Assists the OR Service Leader in analyzing data, ensuring team adherence to performance standards, and improving processes continuously
* Demonstrate initiative in problem solving as related to patient and technical issues that contribute to the improvement of the Operating Room function and operation
* Proficient in all surgical services and endoscopy procedures performed at APD to serve as a preceptor and resource to employees.
* Proficient in our instrumentation tracking system SPM
* Proficient in Provation our endoscopy documentation system
* Provides mentoring to the CSR, OR assistant, and CST
* Works collaboratively and has respect for and understanding other clinical disciplines
* Demonstrates superior knowledge of aseptic and surgical techniques in the role of surgical technologist
* Be a Liaison with Sterile Processing to evaluate and communicate the daily instrumentation requirements by identifying any missing instrumentations while communicating the needs and seeing the items to the case, to also include loaner instrumentation
* Be a Liaison with Materials Management to evaluate and communicate the supply requirements by identifying any missing items, ensure they are precured, and available for the case
* Assist in the preparation and turnover of the operating rooms and equipment for pending surgical procedures
* Partner with the nurse educator on new CST orientee training
* Assist with daily efficiency and throughput in specialty service and communicate with coordinators
* Meets with the supervisor on a weekly basis to coordinate service priorities
* Ensure that the operating rooms have been organized and restocked for the next day
* Support cost containment in the use of materials and equipment
* Participate in peer review
* Participate in preference card updates
* Assists with break coverage
* Contributes to the short- and long-term departmental planning and strategy
* Assists in the review, development and revisions of policies and procedures for his/her area of the department

* Assists surgeon as surgical technologist according to prescribed standards
* Sets up sterile back table, instruments and supplies according to type of operation
* Assists and anticipates needs of the physician in instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies according to technique, procedure and special requirements
* Observes patient and is ready for emergencies
* Maintains correct count of sponges, needles and instruments with circulating nurse and reports correctness and discrepancies as setup in standard policy and procedure
* Performs surgical technologist role in the surgical time outs
* Works on-call and performs all related duties as prescribed
* Scrubs and dons’ gown and gloves in accordance with performance standards
* Assists with draping as directed by the physician
* Maintains aseptic technique at all times as dictated by standard procedure
* Assists in application of dressing
* Prepares procedure room and equipment before an endoscopic procedure
* Proficient in Provation our endoscopy documentation system
* Assists under the direct supervision of the physician with diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures including specimen collection and handling
* Performs safety checks to verify proper equipment functioning
* Pretreats endoscopes and surgical instrumentation according to manufactures instructions for use (IFU) and facilities policies /procedures
* Performs proper transportation of soiled endoscopes and instrumentation is being carried out in conjunction with IFUs and policies/procedures
* Participates in reporting quality and infection control measures
* Transports, transfers and assist with positioning and prepping of the patients in a safe, efficient manner under the direction of the operative team/leadership
* Perform cleaning and turnover of surgical suites and procedure room according to policy in an efficient manner
* Performs the surgical case picking by obtaining case carts, instruments, supplies, and equipment needed for safe and efficient patient care
* Assists with obtaining and returning instrumentation, supplies, and equipment before during and after the procedure
* Maintains strong communication with the Central Sterile Reprocessing and Material Management Department regarding instrumentation and supplies needs
* Proficient with our SPM Instrumentation Tracking system
* Assists with opening sterile field
* Assists with transferring patients between OR table, stretcher, or hospital bed
* Assists with transporting specimens to the lab
* Assist in setting up all equipment related to surgical procedures as deemed competent
* Maintains supplies and storage areas in an orderly and clean manner including rotation of stock, checking outdates, and integrity of packaging
* Communicates with appropriate personnel regarding any situation which could impact patients, visitors, staff or equipment
* Assists with cleaning, restocking, and set up of anesthesia supplies and equipment
* Maintains awareness of safety hazards and use of equipment to prevent damage or harm to personnel and patients
* Maintains traffic control through use of proper areas and corridors at all times
* Responds immediately when called upon for additional or emergency service
* Identifies opportunities to improve within the unit and assists with the application
* Maintains and increases standards of performance and education
* Attends departmental in-services and staff meetings and assists in preparation of learning experiences
* Ability to work in a fast-paced department
* Assists in staff's development and revision of procedures/policies and related items
* Perform other duties as assigned by Charge Nurse, Supervisors, and/or Director
