Lead Groundskeeper

landscaping, snow removal and exterior maintenance and repair services or the campus and related offsite locations.  Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies and must be competent in the application of the National Fire Codes. This position must strive to provide a reliable, healthy and safe environment for patients, visitors, and associates under the general supervision of the Manager.

Major Responsibilities:
Provides effective supervision and management of associates assigned to the grounds department.
Works collaboratively with the manager establishing goals and quality standards for the grounds department.

Collaborates with the manager on hiring, progressive discipline, rewards and recognition of associates.

Established work schedules to ensure proper coverage. Provides direction on priority of work. Provides guidance and oversight on the use of contractors to supplement the work of associates assigned to the department.

Approves overtime as warranted and edits time cards accordingly.

Develops work schedule for associates. Prioritizes and schedules associates to perform corrective, preventive and predictive maintenance.

Trains grounds associates on tools and equipment. Performs quality checks on associates for safety, proper technique and equipment preventive maintenance correcting and reeducating as required.

Develops first draft of the snow removal plan.

Ensures parking lots and roadways are maintained and have adequate lighting and wayfinding.

Supervises grounds department associates and outside contractors to ensure timely completion and achievement of desired grounds maintenance goals.
Provides manager with draft annual evaluation for associates and contractors.

Approves PTO and overtime to ensure proper staffing

Recommends disciplinary action pertaining to grounds associates.

Schedules all outside contractors.

Submits invoices for timely payment.

Ensures grounds associates and vendors follow proper safety procedures.

Establishes, monitors and improves the preventive maintenance program for the repair of hospital owned vehicles, grounds and farm equipment.
Ensures grounds associates and vendors complete assigned PMs by established deadlines.

Ensures that all new areas and assigned equipment is inventoried and that preventive/predictive tasks and frequencies consistent with manufactures recommendations and regulatory standards are established.

Takes appropriate action on problems reported that were not resolved during inspections.

Repairs grounds equipment to include lawn mowers, edger's, chain saws, tools and equipment.

Responsible for ensuring vehicles are properly maintained performing oil changes, greasing, filter replacement, tune-ups, small engine repair.

Monitors repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles not self performed. Inspects, verifies and approves repair invoices.

Establishes, monitors and improves standard operating policies and procedures for the grounds department to include best horticultural practices.
Develops service contract, conducts interviews, selects and monitors contracted services for the maintenance of trees, shrubs and flowers.

Knowledge of insect control and chemical treatment for trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers.

Ensures grounds associates and contractors are utilizing the most affective mowing and watering practices.

Oversees the application of chemicals used for weed control.

Provides leadership and direction of aquatic chemicals for algae control in retention ponds

Accountable for the cleanliness, setup and staffing of on or off campus building and areas used for hospital functions. Include all outdoor holiday decorations and various tasks for other departments.

Education/Experience Required:
High School Graduate 3 - 4 yrs experience in ornamental horticulture and/or grounds management Some College preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
Knowledge, ability, and skill to operate power equipment and power tools Ability to read and interpret blueprints
Valid Illinois Drivers License with good driving record. Fertilizer Chemical License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Exposure to hazardous chemicals and toxic substances. Ability to climb, push, pull, bend, and reach, as needed to perform essential job activities. Mobility to access work areas.
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
