Lead Fire Protection & PRA Engineer - Nuclear City Remote Country United States Area of Interest Engineering Type Full Time - Regular Job ID 2025-17235 Business Group Nuclear Power Group Department Nuclear Plant Analysis Description Fire protection design/specification development for fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, water supply/distribution systems, and life safety issuesTask management activities associated with modifications involving fire suppression systems, and alarm systems and water supply/distribution systems Reviews of modifications to ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulationsReview design documents, construction documents, submittals prepared by others for compliance with applicable fire protection codes and standardsThis position will offer you the ability to directly apply your knowledge of probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) methods to support multiple nuclear utility clients.You will be preparing PRA calculations, evaluations, and technical reports to support client risk-informed engineering projects and programs.You will assist in the development of proposals and cost estimates for the PRA scope of risk-informed projects.You will be responsible for presenting PRA project results to client management or integrated decision-making panels. There is the potential for you to travel to client and vendor offices for meetings and to plant site locations for meetings and field verification of designs.

S&L is heavily involved in the design and licensing of next generation nuclear plants including multiple small modular reactor (SMR) designs and these responsibilities also include:

Development of a conceptual fire protection strategies/Fire Protection System Design DocumentsDevelopment of the Fire Hazards AnalysisDevelopment of Internal Fires Risk EvaluationInterpretation/Compliance with Life Safety CodesDevelopment of Safety Analysis Reports

Essential skills and experience:

This position requires a BS in engineering from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved programA minimum of 5 years of experience including:
Fire detection and alarm systemsFire suppression systemsHydraulic sprinkler design and layout analysis programsMinimum of 12 years of experience developing nuclear power industry PRA analysesAssignments require the preparation of calculations and reports, and excellent technical report writing skills are essentialStrong interest in numerical computations and problem solvingProficiency with industry PRA softwareProficiency with MS Office applicationsExcellent written and verbal communication skills

Valued but not required skills and experience:

Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and designation as an Engineer in TrainingPE licenseExperience in performing PRA analyses in support of surveillance frequency control programs (SFCP)Experience in performing categorization of systems in support of 10CFR50.69 programsFire PRA, Seismic PRA, and other external event PRA model development and application experiencePost fire or aircraft impact safe-shutdown analysisInterest and experience with thermal-hydraulic software to support PRA success criteria or design-basis analysis (e.g. MAAP, GOTHIC, RELAP)
