A Brief Summary of This Position:
This Lead role is responsible for the development, implementation, support, and maintenance of drafting systems and standards for the Utility Division’s Steel Transmission Drafting Group China. The primary deliverables are 3D models and CAD drawings for fabricated steel transmission structures used in electric power transmission.
The position oversees daily operations of the China drafting team, ensuring alignment with customer specifications and order requirements. It also coordinates closely with engineering, sales, and manufacturing departments. The role involves addressing a range of challenges, including drafting practices, training programs, and system improvements. Collaboration with the Director of Drafting, Site Drafting Managers/Supervisors, and Engineering Managers is essential to support divisional goals and resolve complex issues.
Essential Functions:
Reports to the Director of Drafting – Global UtilityOccasional travel (up to 5%, domestic/international), including overnight staysFlexibility to work outside standard hours to support international teamsLead the development, deployment, and support of drafting systems and standardsDrive consistent training programs and ensure drafting team proficiencyProvide technical guidance and motivation to the drafting groupEstablish and maintain efficient workflows and job prioritization to meet business needsFoster strong relationships with internal teams, customers, and external partnersPromote a collaborative and productive work environment across departmentsOther Important Details about the Role:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate advanced technical proficiency in drafting and CAD, particularly within Utility CAD programs including Autodesk AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault Pro, and CATO. A solid understanding of product applications, fabrication and welding processes, manufacturing methods, and quality assurance standards is essential. Strong leadership capabilities are required to guide and motivate technical teams, ensuring high productivity. Given the cross-functional nature of this role, excellent communication skills are necessary to effectively convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:
Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years of relevant experience, Associate’s degree with 5+ years, or 7+ years of equivalent experienceIn-depth knowledge of Utility Steel Division drafting systems and standardsAbility to interpret engineering details, project plans, and specifications, and communicate them clearly to gain alignmentProven leadership skills with a collaborative, goal-oriented approachAdaptability in a fast-paced, dynamic environmentStrong problem-solving skills and attention to detailStrong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication abilitiesProficiency in at least two Utility Steel product linesAcceptable record of performance and attendanceProficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and advanced skills in Autodesk tools (AutoCAD, Inventor, Vault Pro)Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:
