The base salary range represents a good faith salary range for this position. This position is eligible for annual incentive pay and has the opportunity for continued salary growth. If you are hired at American Water your base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as market, geography, skills, education and/or experience. Primary Role Lead and conduct operational audits and projects to assess AW’s risks and controls to ensure: Compliance with laws and regulations, The effectiveness and efficiency of operations, and The safeguarding of company assets. This role will work closely with various stakeholders to improve risk management and share knowledge on operational matters such as environmental management systems, water quality, treatment, engineering, safety, and regulatory compliance. Work Environment The ideal candidate will be based in our Camden, NJ office following a hybrid schedule working 3 days a week. We will consider a remote work schedule with a requirement to work remotely within a state where AW operates. Key Accountabilities Assess risks and controls following internal audit industry standards and AW IA procedures. Lead operational risk-based audits/projects and audit teams ensuring quality and timely audit deliverables. This includes coordination, planning, fieldwork, audit/project reports, and issue resolution. Collaborate with and influence stakeholders through effective communication of audit/project observations and recommendations to reduce risk and enhance controls. Independently propose recommendations that support AW strategies and objectives. Build rapport across diverse teams including AW stakeholders and external vendors throughout audits/projects, manage competing interests as needed. Train / develop junior team members to ensure team productivity. Ensure communication and performance of responsibilities is organized, efficient, proactive, timely, cost effective and professional. Serve as an internal or external representative for AW and/or Internal Audit in areas of expertise. Assist in the development of a pipeline for talent in area(s) of expertise. Knowledge/Skills Possess in-depth expertise in these operational areas: water and wastewater treatment, water quality, environmental management systems/ procedures, environmental regulations, health and safety regulations, engineering, and operational matters. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on initiative, knowledge sharing, and decision making. Strong project management and planning skills, including the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously in teams or independently. Knowledge of industry policies, procedures, regulations and laws. Skill in collecting and analyzing complex data, evaluating information and systems and drawing logical conclusions. Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Proficiency with systems such as SAP and PowerPlan is a plus. Experience/Education Bachelor’s degree required. Engineering, chemistry, biology, environmental science areas of study preferred. Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience with operating water/wastewater treatment and environmental management systems or equivalent preferred. Certifications/Licenses Water and/or Wastewater Operator License, and/or engineering qualification preferred. Other professional certification(s), licensure, or advanced degree are a plus. Travel Requirements Up to 5% travel within the United States. Travel is scheduled with advanced notice. Active State Driver's License required with the ability to pass a motor vehicle report.
