Lead Applications Engineer
Job Description SummaryAs a GE Vernova accelerator, GE Vernova Advanced Research is driving strategy and leading research & development efforts to execute on the business’s mission to help power the energy transition. We forge the collaborations and help invent the technologies required to electrify and decarbonize for a zero-carbon future.

Representing virtually every major scientific and engineering discipline, our researchers are collaborating with GE Vernova’s businesses, the U.S. government, and more than 420 entities at the forefront of technology to execute on 150+ energy focused projects. Collectively, these research programs and initiatives aim to solve near term technical challenges, deliver next generation product advances, and drive long term breakthrough innovation to enable more affordable, reliable, sustainable, and secure energy.

As a Lead Applications Engineer in the Carbon Capture Technology Breakout, you will conduct research on advanced engineered sorbent material systems as applied to industrial challenges across the Vernova Advanced Research portfolio, including decarbonization and power generation. You will be responsible for applying system-level engineering principles, computational modeling approaches and experimental techniques to define the system operation process for the products within our product roadmap, including for point source and direct air carbon capture and atmospheric water harvesting.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

Conduct applied research in sorption and separation technologies, including system design, fabrication & testing, process development and optimization, and performance evaluation.

Lead and conduct the optimization of system engineering, showing through experimentation the impacts of process optimization, including sorbent, contactor, component and system modification.

Apply data and create technical documents to support field deployments of prototypes, pilots, and/or products.  Monitor and support deployed prototypes and pilots, observing product performance in the field (remotely) and ensuring optimal system performance.

Work collaboratively with the business and customers to determine system level performance requirements and develop fundamental system knowledge through experimentation and modeling.  Work closely across the sorbent, coating, prototype testing and system modeling teams to ensure technical feasibility and timely delivery of product features. Iteratively improve performance for various applications, such as carbon capture (direct air and post-combustion) and atmospheric water extraction.

Develop technical datasheets to effectively communicate product value proposition to customers. Support technology transfer and scale up of the developed processes at pilot and commercial sites and to business and external customers. Advise and support go-to-market strategies, ensuring a strong technical path toward successful pilots and product launches.

Identify novel material system structures and system configurations with improved performance (productivity, cyclability, etc.), greater reliability, and lower energy requirements, especially under relevant environmental conditions (pressure, temperature, relative humidity, flow).

Be a member of a multidisciplinary team, including Chemists, Material Scientists, Chemical Engineers, Thermal Engineers, and Mechanical Engineers to develop material systems across diverse application spaces.

Build relationships with colleagues at GE Vernova Advanced Research with a wide variety of technical expertise and business responsibilities. Engage in all facets of technical development, including laboratory testing, modelling, and prototype and systems development.

Identify and form collaborative relationships with suppliers, vendors and industrial partners, as well as GE experts to leverage internal capability and increase impact.

Investigate, identify and pursue commercial opportunities, proposing solutions to some of the world’s toughest challenges.

Support IP strategy development and prior art analysis, write disclosures and patent applications and collect rigorous experimental data for IP patent processes.

Deliver technical results, progress and insights through effective presentations, reports, and publications to GE Vernova Advanced Research leadership, the GE Vernova businesses, government agencies, professional societies, and peer-reviewed journals.
