WSP is currently recruiting a **qualified lawyer** to work within the UK and ZA Legal Team supporting our business disciplines in South Africa. The team in South Africa is involved in many prestigious projects including in the environmental, mining, transport and infrastructure, buildings and power and energy sectors. The role will offer interesting and career enhancing opportunities to legal professionals. The role involves being responsible for contributing to the effective management of legal risk within WSP South Africa as part of the UK and ZA Legal Team through the provision of commercial, pragmatic, legal input to engineering consultancy appointments across all engineering disciplines, with a primary focus on drafting and reviewing appointments, contract negotiation and advising on contractual issues which may arise during delivery of the services. A typical week would include: + Supporting the management of contractual and commercial risk through the provision of commercially oriented and solutions focused legal advice to the business in South Africa. + Reviewing and negotiating consultancy agreements and contracts, with a particular focus on global mining clients. + Liaising with internal with the business disciplines and other professionals working in our support functions in relation to terms of appointment and delivery issues. + Managing the contract review process to minimize any impact on WSP South Africa’s working capital and proactively seeks the timely conclusion of contract negotiations. + Advising on aspects of contract and construction law. + Ensuring that corporate governance policies and procedures are fully implemented and maintained in relation to contract reviews and approvals, including working closely with the WSP Ethics & Compliance team. + Providing advice and guidance on tender documents to identify and address risk and promote competitiveness. + Updating the business on legal developments and delivering business focused training on legal topics from time to time. + Ensuring that contractual risk positions are consistent with insurance coverage. + Supporting the business in the contract delivery phase to maximize revenue and minimize risk. We’d love to hear from you if you have: The successful candidate will be a lawyer qualified to practice in South Africa with at least 4 years’ experience of advising on contracts in either an in-house or private practice environment, including specific experience of mining sector contracts. The role will involve liaison with senior management, directors and project managers as well as external liaison with clients, their legal advisors and other external bodies. In addition, you must also have: + Excellent communication skills, written and oral + A commercial and pragmatic approach to the giving legal advice + The ability to work without supervision under pressure and meet deadlines reporting to the Risk and Legal Manager. + A proactive approach with the ability to prioritise between competing business demands + Strong inter-personal and collaborative skills Don’t quite meet all the criteria?
