Coordinator, Environmental Engineering, Covington, VA (LAB TECH) Opportunity The Laboratory Technician is responsible for enabling the mill to meet environmental compliance requirements for the Virginia Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit, assisting production personnel with quality assurance investigations, and maintaining records and documents for the VELAP laboratory accreditation program. Required Qualifications * Associate degree in Chemistry or other related science field, or at least two years\u2019 experience in an industrial setting taking samples and running analytical tests. * Ability to work at heights, climb stairs and ladders, and bend or stoop in varying weather conditions. Must be able to lift 40 pounds. * Proficient computer skills (including MS Office, most importantly Excel and Microsoft Word). * Willing and able to walk and work in an industrial location indoors or outdoors, including walking up and down steps and ladders with all safety equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves, steel-toed shoes, etc.) * Current drivers license. How you will impact Smurfit Westrock The Laboratory Technician will perform the following work functions: * Collecting samples in an industrial setting, such as the following: * Wastewater * Stormwater * Groundwater (from wells) * Raw materials (chips, wood, cooking chemicals) * Intermediate products (paper cooking liquors, chemical additives) * Finished product (Paper/paperboard, turpentine) * Wastes (ash, spilled materials, unknown waste for RCRA characterization) * Perform analyses using instruments in the onsite laboratory. Analysis includes biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), nutrients, pH, bacterial testing, and other internal process analyses. [1] * Preparing samples and shipping papers for sample transport to offsite laboratories * Entering analytical results in a database or spreadsheet for reporting; perform data analysis * Maintain proper housekeeping in the laboratory * Ensuring that laboratory instruments have proper preventative maintenance and care. * Checking that laboratory chemical inventory is adequate. * Adherence to all mill safety rules, participates in safety programs and meetings with the goal of improving safety at the mill * Collect routine samples and perform inspections as requested. * Weekend and holiday duty. Report approximately every fifth week on weekends and holidays. While on call duty, check for permit deviations, conduct laboratory sampling and analysis, and respond accordingly.
