Laboratory Supervisor

Cleveland-Cliffs Indiana Harbor, an integrated steelmaking facility producing hot rolled, cold rolled, and coated products, is seeking a qualified candidate to supervise mechanical and chemical laboratories.  This individual will be responsible for ensuring the laboratory work is completed safely, accurately, and timely in order to deliver quality products to our customers.  

 

Summary of Responsibilities:   

Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.   

Possess the ability to work effectively within a team environment, utilizing clear and effective communication skills.  

Manage laboratories by taking ownership of all processes within functional area to drive timely and accurate results.  

Supervise a crew of hourly employees, uphold and enforce safety standards, housekeeping program, job procedures, and maintain general discipline of the crew. 

Maintain laboratory quality system and ISO 17025 accreditation through A2LA. 

Responsible for analytical method development and application of ASTM and other agency test methods. 

Responsible for maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of laboratory, sample preparation, and testing equipment, promptly to meet manufacturing needs.  

Analyze current operating performance and standard operating procedures and make recommendations for improvement.  

Responsible for writing and maintaining work instructions for laboratory work. 

Maintain inventory of laboratory chemicals and spare equipment.  

Communicate with upstream and downstream operations and non-Cleveland-Cliffs contractors to coordinate work, deliveries, and service. 

Various other duties, as needed, to support the business.  

 

Minimum Qualifications:  

Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Technical Sciences / Engineering. 

Proven communication (verbal and written), analytical, organizational, and time management skills. 

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. 

Ability to work with and teach employees with various educational backgrounds. 

Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic work environment.

Demonstrated success in defining and resolving problems and working for continuous improvement. 

Strong interpersonal skills. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Chemistry. 

Supervisory experience in a manufacturing setting. 

Experience with tensile testing. 

Experience in atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP, XRF, OES). 

Experience with LECO elemental analyzers (C, S, N, O). 

Experience performing wet chemical analysis.
