SUMMARY
Perform professional application of medical technology principles, concepts, and methodology in such specialties as chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, hematology, serology, toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, point of care testing and microbiology using automated analyzers and complex manual techniques.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform manual and automated procedures on patient samples such as serum, blood, urine, semen, tissue, aspirates, swabs, body fluids, and stool. Perform manual and automated procedures in Immunohematology, Microbiology, Immunology, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Chemistry, Shipping and Receiving, Venipuncture, Specimen Processing and collection. Properly and efficiently collect patient’s specimens to ensure stability and integrity of the sample for testing. Manage and prioritize laboratory work based on immediate (STAT), as soon as possible or routine priority. Apply professional knowledge of medical technology principles, concepts, and methodology and work in accordance with the College of American Pathologists (CAP) standards, department standard operating procedures (SOPs), the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) instrument manuals, manufacturer’s instructions and technical references related to testing. Maintain competencies in areas of work in accordance with the College of American Pathologist (CAP) standards, laboratory policies and procedures. Confirm test results and develop data that may be used by physicians in determining the presence and extent of disease or in support of medical research. Modify or design laboratory procedures, establish and monitor quality control systems and measures, and provide instruction in the basic theory, technical skills, and application of laboratory test procedures. Prepare appropriate standards, reagents, and quality control materials required for the performance of test procedures. Conduct quality control/quality assurance reviews on work performed, existing and/or new equipment and reagents, procedures, and manuals within the assigned section of the laboratory and maintain documentation of his/her review in accordance with (IAW) the guidelines established by accrediting/inspecting agencies and/or department policies. Review internal and external quality control programs and works with the supervisor or clinical laboratory chief to resolve discrepancies. Evaluate validity of data in relation to test systems and assay procedures. Integrate and correlate test data with other laboratory and patient data to lead to a conclusion about the normality of a system. Create, use, or modify logic schema to determine corrective actions for problems. Perform preventive maintenance for all instruments. Recognize, locate, and implement corrective action to solve technical or clerical problems. Calibrate or standardize equipment, troubleshoots malfunctions, and make repairs or identify need for external services (e.g. consults SOP or operator’s manual, contacts manufacturer customer service hotline, contacts biomedical maintenance, etc.). Ensure that reagents, controls, calibrators, etc. are labeled in accordance with laboratory policies. Record temperatures of refrigerators, freezers, water baths, etc. Initiate maintenance requests when required. Perform required maintenance or user level tasks (e.g. load paper or labels) in hospital information system and instrument systems and printers. Analyze blood samples/units for use in transfusions by identifying the number of cells, the cell morphology or the blood group, blood type, and compatibility with other blood types. Coordinate implementation of approved solutions to quality assurance and risk management problems with all affected parties within the department of pathology and/or other departments or services within the medical center. Provide data, information, and analytically based recommendations on a monthly basis to sectional management for use in fulfilling quality assurance monitoring responsibilities. Manage expendable and non-expendable resources effectively. Conduct patient care in a manner customary with the career field. Discuss results and findings of laboratory tests and procedures with physicians clearly. Assemble medical equipment and prepare area to ensure proper equipment operation. Perform collection/analysis/review of clinical laboratory testing in accordance with established operating instructions, ensuring reporting of accurate results within established turnaround time. Provide consultative support to medical staff concerning test selection, timing, specimen quality, and interpretation of results. Ensure accuracy of information during annual Lab Guide review. Maintain regular and punctual attendance. Perform all other duties as assigned.
