Contributes to the overall operation of the laboratory by receiving, preparing, and processing patient samples before analysis. Handles telephone inquiries and performs computer and billing functions. * Assists with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing, and transporting specimens. * Maintains adequate stock of supplies. * Maintains work area in a safe, aseptic, and organized manner. * Performs clerical duties including answering phones, data entry, and filing. * Communicates test results to appropriate healthcare providers. * Verifies proper patient and/or specimen identification, payer type, and diagnosis code before processing specimens. * Ensures that specimens are received or accessioned, and labeled accurately and completely. * Distribute specimens, results, etc., to appropriate departments promptly. * Notifies department supervisor of significant problems related to specimens, instruments, or test orders. * Assesses sample adequacy and recognizes samples of unacceptable quality; documents and informs client of problem. * Print reports as necessary to appropriate locations, ensuring patient confidentiality. *Minimum Education:* * High school diploma or equivalent required. *Required Skills:* * Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision. * Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
