Our PPD® Laboratory Services team has a direct impact on improving patient health through the expertise of scientists, industry thought-leaders and therapeutic guides. This position will be based at our new bioanalytical laboratory in GoCo Health Innovation City which is due to open later this year. This lab will serve pharmaceutical and biotech customers with advanced laboratory services and leading-edge instrumentation across all phases of pharmaceutical development to help deliver life-changing medicines to patients worldwide and will provide comprehensive and full-service solutions, encompassing both small and large molecules, biomarkers and novel modalities.

The Automation Lead provides line-level management for a small team which inclides coordination of resources and work schedules for laboratory automation activities. The successful candidate will oversee daily operations and assist in preparation and implementation of company policies, quality systems and training programs.  The Automation Lead ensures that laboratory staff continues to be developed to keep pace with department goals and growth. You will also be responsible for the regulatory and scientific conduct of development, qualification, and/or validation work in support of automated instrumentatio and routinely acts as the technical project leader for multiple projects, interacting with clients as needed.

A day in the Life: 

Independently performs program optimization and validation of complex scripts. Understands and conforms to methods, and protocols applicable to assigned tasks. Designs and executes experiments independently.Reviews and critiques automated instrumentation programs and associated documentation and other related technical documents.Communicates data, technical issues, information regarding project definitions and expectations, and discussions of project status to stakeholders as neededProvides technical guidanceLeads analytical (procedural and instrumentation-related) troubleshooting sessionsAssists in preparation and implementation of SOPs and quality systems.Reviews, interprets, and analyzes data for technical, quality and compliance to protocols, methods, SOPs, client criteria and Good Manufacturing Practices(GMP) or Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).Performs self and peer review of the data for accuracy and compliance with reporting requirements prior to submission to QA and issuance to customers.Evaluates available technical options to obtain desired quality of analytical results, economics, ease of introduction into a production environment, and robustness in analytical application.Communicates status of project efforts to manager.Provides leadership and mentoring to team members in order to improve their technical expertise and scientific knowledge.Implements novel approaches to method development and applications as appropriate.Provides training/orientation to production staff as needed to successfully implement methods. Assists in startup and troubleshooting methods through the first analytical application and as needed in future projects.Complex remedial maintenance (e.g., complex hardware replacements)Performs programming and/or process mapping for fully automated workflowsImplements data integrity processes; supports instrument software validation effortsProvides team coaching/mentorshipOrganizes, schedules and supervises laboratory automation resources for group's project activities

Keys to Success:  

Education and Experience 

BSc/MSc in a Scientific/Engineering discipline. Other fields of study may also be considered for example Computer Science, Programming.

4+ years experience in laboratory automation with 1+ year of leadership experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job

In some cases, an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.  

Skills/Abilities:

Direct experience with automation instrumentation required; vendor service certification preferredExperience with programming (Hamilton Venus, TECAN EVOware or Fluent Control, Thermo Momentum, VB, Python, etc.) required; vendor programming certification (or equivalent) preferredAbility to operate and troubleshoot a wide variety of analytical instrumentation and data acquisition systemsAbility to manage multiple tasks and prioritiesProven project management skillsProven ability to work in a collaborative work environment with a teamProven understanding of GxP requirements, SOPs, ICH guidelines, USP requirements and FDAProven troubelshooting and critical thinking skills; ability to independently perform root cause analysis for method investigationsProficient in complex automated platform software use and programming and/or hardware troublshooting/replacementProven ability to train or provide mentorship to other automation staff for programming, system optimization, validation/qualification requirements, etc.Knowledge of data generation and statistical programsKnowledge of general chemistry, separation science, immunochemistry, molecular genomics, biomarker, and/or vaccine science related concepts and/or technologies (as applicable)Proven technical writing skillsProven effective communication (written and oral) and organizational skillsProven leadership skillsDemonstrated ability to be project-solution drivenAbility to write and recommend changes to SOPs
