Job Overview:

Under general supervision, the Lab Assistant, oversees accessions, stains, filters and mounts cells of every part of the human body for detection of cancer and other pathological conditions. Prepares necessary supplies and equipment for fine needle aspiration, FNA, procedures and further assists with the FNA procedure in direct patient care settings. Provides support for Central Processing area, send out testing, lab office, and outpatient laboratory.  Performs additional tasks as requested by Chairman of Pathology or designee.

Qualifications:

Required:

High school graduate or equivalent up to two years of college

Essential Functions:

Works in clinical laboratory and patient care areasContinuous exposure to blood and body fluids, infectious patients, chemical agents, and hazardous wasteAdheres to all policies regarding the safe handling of specimensFollows prescribed methods for needle and syringe control, and maintains and cleans accessioning and procurement dispatch area and equipment, such as countertops, centrifuges, refrigerators, etcParticipates in on-going education, such as in service, continuing education, etcAssists physician and other hospital staff in preparation and collection of fine needle aspiration biopsiesMaintains positive patient identification through specimen collection processLogs in blood and or non-blood specimens into Pathology Deptvia Hospital Information System and or Laboratory Information System, indicating accessioning time type of specimen, patient identification, and quantity of sampleSeparates specimen labels for multiple section test analysisCovers Central Processing and Lab Office during breaks, meals and periods of high volume, or as assignedPerforms send out testingReceives, logs-in, and prints specimen labels for reference laboratory specimensCentrifuges, aliquots, and stores specimens according to reference lab policies and proceduresAccessions, labels and process all specimens and enters all information into computerCentrifuges and pipettes off supernatant and splits specimens for multiple section and test analysis setting up work sheets for some large volume analyzersCollects blood and non-blood specimens from nursing units and transports to Pathology Department,Determines acceptability of specimens, resolves discrepancies with accessioning personnel procurement dispatch technicians, nursing personnel, physicians and other personnelPerforms clerical and administrative duties, such as answering telephone, maintaining files, typing, copying, binding, scanning reports, script verification etcAnswers telephone in a timely manner giving information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guidelinesReviews on a periodic basis all policy, procedure and instrument manuals in order to ensure compliance and maintain current knowledge of proceduresStocks shelves with laboratory supplies, issues 24-hour urine containers with or without preservative, and maintains the accessioning and procurement dispatch areasAlso maintains equipment, such as centrifuges and refrigeratorsNeed excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with clients, patients, nurses, physicians, and co workers both in person and on the telephoneEnsure patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with medical regulationsThey also ensure that medical professionals receive patient information along with their blood samples
