About the Job
Red Hat’s Kernel Linux Engineering team is looking for a Lab Engineer to join our Billerica, MA location and support Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployments. In this role, you will work on Linux kernel and hardware development for servers and client systems. You will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and administering x86 hardware, performing firmware and hardware upgrades, and collaborating with engineering teams, vendors, and the open source community. This role is ideal for anyone interested in lab and data center operations working with Linux and open source technologies.
What You Will Do
Maintain and administer x86 hardware, including configuration changes
Upgrade firmware and hardware within the data center
Coordinate with hardware vendors on timelines for new hardware arrivals
Perform other administrative tasks related to labs, including decommissioning and e-waste handling
Collaborate with Engineering, Quality Engineering, Product Management, Documentation, and product build teams
Assist with network troubleshooting and triaging
Organize and facilitate capacity planning activities, including hardware deliveries and rack configurations
Respond to engineering requests via ticket systems
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for AI integration within the software development lifecycle, driving continuous improvement and innovation in engineering practices; share use cases for successful experiments with stakeholders for broader use.

What You Will Bring
Expertise in hardware bring-up and working with hardware prototypes
Familiarity with x86 systems and their ecosystems
Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external teams
Ability to work independently in a small team environment
Willingness to work in a hybrid setting in Billerica, MA, including a data center environment
Strong organizational skills to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks
The Following Are Considered a Plus
Knowledge of Git and upstream Linux kernel patch posting procedures, or experience with upstream development
Experience working with chip manufacturers
Knowledge of U-Boot or UEFI
Familiarity with networking concepts like DNS/DHCP and VLAN/subnetting
Knowledge of Ansible
Experience with containers (Podman, Docker) and virtual machines
Knowledge of at least one low-level language: C, C++, or Rust
Knowledge of at least one scripting language: Bash or Python

The salary range for this position is $86,640.00 - $138,500.00. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications.Pay Transparency
Red Hat determines compensation based on several factors including but not limited to job location, experience, applicable skills and training, external market value, and internal pay equity. Annual salary is one component of Red Hat’s compensation package. This position may also be eligible for bonus, commission, and/or equity. For positions with Remote-US locations, the actual salary range for the position may differ based on location but will be commensurate with job duties and relevant work experience.
