Kennel Assistant
The Veterinary Assistant is responsible for providing excellent customer service, patient care and client education. They are also responsible for ensuring all necessary functions of the hospital are maintained. Patient handling Exhibit appropriate restraint of all canine, feline and exotic patients. Thorough knowledge of canine and feline body language Exhibit appropriate restraint and positioning for radiographs Exhibit appropriate restraint for abdominal and cardiac ultrasound Appointment assistant duties Obtain TPR on all canine, feline and exotic patients Ensure weight is entered for all patients Thorough and efficient patient history collection Clear and concise communication of patient history to DVM Knowledge of and ability to communicate hospital wellness protocol for all ages Draw up and administer appropriate vaccines Safely perform blood draws with appropriate supervision Ability to clearly explain wellness plans to clients Enter charges appropriately Ensure all medical notes are entered for each patient by end of day Clean exam room after each appointment Technician appointment duties Obtain TPR on all canine, feline and exotic patients Draw up and administer appropriate vaccines Safely perform blood draws with appropriate supervision Perform nail trims on canines, felines and rabbits Perform anal gland expression on canines and felines Communicate clearly with all clients Enter charges appropriately Ensure all medical notes are entered for each patient by end of day General hospital duties Clean kennels Write down low inventory items Collect free catch urine samples Feed and walk hospitalized patients Perform cold laser treatments as prescribed by DVM Administer oral and topical treatments as directed by RVT or DVM Ensure cleanliness of laboratory, treatment and general hospital areas Restock exam rooms, laboratory, treatment and urgent care Keep up on laundry throughout day Complete opening and closing duties Laboratory Prepare samples appropriately Complete in-house bloodwork and urinalysis utilizing Heska and IDEXX machines Prepare and read ear, skin and fecal cytology Calibrate Heska and IDEXX equipment appropriately Perform hematocrit Perform USG Perform blood glucose and ketones Prepare outside reference lab samples with appropriate second verification Front desk/client service Answer overflow calls after 3 rings Check out clients in room when needed Flip surgery suite between procedures Turn on all monitoring equipment Prepare IV fluids and pump Set up surgery table based on procedure and size of patient Pull appropriate packs for procedure Turn on and calibrate surgical laser Clean all calbes and surfaces at the end of every procedure Flip dental table between procedures Ensure dental machine is turned on and has clean attachments Remove any dirty equipment and tools Clean dental elevators appropriately Place cleaned instruments in milpouches for sterilization Set up table for patient Pack and prep Clean surgery laundry Familiarity of contents of each pack Wrap, label and sterilize all packs Facilities Ensure cleanliness of all areas of hospital Complete 1 continuing education module each month Accountable for the below in all areas of work Deliver clinical excellence Contribute to a positive hospital culture Maintain a trusted relationship with clinical team Effective time management Deliver outstanding client service Communicate effectively Care for pets with empathy and patience Advocate for pet via client education High School diploma or GED preferred. Flexible schedule including some weekend/holiday shifts. Must have computer skills, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Must possess strong communication skills, good judgment and be able to manage stressful situations. Must have the physical and mental capacity to perform in a fast paced and challenging environment. Must be able to lift 50+ lbs.
