The K-9 Officer also collaborates, initiates, and supports opportunities with other functions and external agencies by championing the goals and priorities of the Tribe in a manner that faithfully reflects and upholds the Tribe’s mission, vision, and values.Essential Duties And Responsibilities
1. Conducts searches using a canine near buildings, parking lots, office areas, vehicles, packages, and people in and around San Manuel properties. Provides a strong visible/psychological deterrent against criminal threats. Provides an immediate and specialized response to threats, unattended packages, or other dangerous items to detect or quickly rule out the presence of dangerous materials with minimal/no interruption to business of the Enterprise. Conducts other specialized searches in support of public safety operations.
2. Conducts patrols of assigned areas (e.g., San Manuel Reservation, Yaamava’ Resort & Casino, Parking Structures, San Manuel Village, The Commons, and various off-site properties) with canines to ensure the security of all properties. Provides a deterrent to the planting of explosive devices or substances as well as patrolling to detect devices already in place. Conducts other specialized patrols specific to K-9 detection training and capabilities.
3. Responds to and conducts security sweeps, dignitary protection assignments, and searches areas to locate and identify suspicious or hazardous materials. Responds to incidents and actively transports canine to the scene(s) to investigate incidents, including incidents in-progress, encounters where explosives or explosive devices exist, and other related calls.
4. Provides daily care and maintenance of the canine at work and home through proper grooming, exercise, food, water, shelter, and veterinary care. Provides emergency first aid for canines as required. Maintains care and control of authorized equipment, K-9 patrol vehicles and firearms.
5. Conducts community relations K-9 demonstrations, presentations, and addresses a variety of audiences regarding the function and mission of the K-9 team. Provides training to DPS officers and other employees - regarding the identification of potentially suspicious packages, hazardous materials and/or explosives, in addition to other specialized detection capabilities.
6. Collaborates with various authorities and external agencies to ensure the safety of the public as well as first responders (fire, sheriff, paramedics, state and federal). Maintains partnerships with other K-9 teams to address requests for investigating -explosives and bomb threat related incidents or other specialized detection services. Conducts interstate travel to support Tribal related events, such as the annual Tribal Unity Retreat, Tribal Youth Retreat, and Annual Pow Wow including but limited to Tribal community gatherings, business conferences, community relations, and promotional events.
7. Performs other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.
Educational, Experience And Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required.Associate degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a law enforcement officer, San Manuel DPS Public Safety Officer, K-9 Handler, security agency, or related field is required. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (Ksa) Required to maintain a safe environment for the canine while off-duty.
Required to have a fenced single-family home. Minimum 5-foot fence with locking gate and securable garage suitable for the security of the K-9 patrol vehicle.
Must complete an in-house six (6) week basic Public Safety Officer academy.
Must have the ability to be assigned as a K-9 Officer for a minimum of three years, preferably for the life of the canine.
Must complete the initial K-9 training at an approved training facility.
Must complete K-9 handler certificate or equal to POST guidelines.
Must attend a minimum of 20 hours of continuous training, with canines, per month to maintain proficiency and certification or minimum training for specialized detection capabilities.
Must attend advance training annually in the identification of explosive ordnance and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) for explosive detection canines.
Must be willing to support the Special Services Division’s Executive Services Team by attending related training and assisting with related operations.
Must be willing to sign and maintain a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) to control, distribute, and receive confidential information from the client(s)/ principal or department management.
Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
Must be willing to be available in an on-call status.
Pass a psychological evaluation meeting California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) mandates.Required Licenses, Certifications And Registrations At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission, you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
Must maintain a valid California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Guard Card and Exposed Firearm Permit.
Must maintain a Taser and expandable baton certification.
Must obtain certification from the National Police K-9 Association, The California Narcotics K-9 Officers Association, and California Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Must obtain training and certification as a Terrorism Liaison Officer (TLO) from the Joint Regional Intelligence Center (JRIC) within 12 months of becoming a K-9 Officer.
Must obtain training and certification in K-9 First Aid and AED-related training within 12 months of becoming a K-9 Officer.
Authorized Driver: Role requires operation or driving of Tribe-owned vehicles or driving patron vehicles. A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record as determined by the insurance carrier is required. Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions – Environment

Physically able to withstand the challenges of extensive walking, climbing, and descending numerous interior and external stairs, including multi-level building facilities.
Hearing sufficient to hear conversational levels in person, via videoconference and over the telephone.
Speech sufficient to make oneself heard and understood in person, in front of groups, in meetings, via videoconference and over the telephone.
Visual acuity that meets the requirements of the position: The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading and visual inspection of employees, visitors or facility.
Mobility sufficient to safely move in an office environment, walk, stoop, bend and kneel, and enter, exit and operate a motor vehicle in the course of travel to promotional events, meetings, conferences, trade shows and San Manuel properties.
Endurance sufficient to sit, walk and stand for extended periods, and maintain efficiency throughout the entire work shift and during extended work hours.
The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including secondhand smoke.
Will be exposed to outdoor weather conditions such as rain, wind, and cold and hot climates.
