Neurology
+ The IOM Technician Level 2 is an advanced valuable member of the intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring team working closely and collaboratively with nurses, physicians, and other medical staff caring for the patient. Performs all technical aspects involved in all intraoperative monitoring duties including but not limited to: EEG, Evoked Potential, Motor Mapping, Motor Cranial Nerve, ABRs, Sensorimotor cortex, EMG and TcMEP studies. Performs test setup, electrode application, maintaining patient safety, and other related duties. Provides information to patients regarding neuromonitoring to insure understanding and minimize anxiety. Communicates data analysis and understanding of modalities. Abstract relevant information to Clinical Director and Medical Staff of all pertinent information and changes to ensure the highest quality of care to patients. Provides technical neuromonitoring to the departments of Neurosurgery, Vascular surgery, General Surgery, Cardiothoracic surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Oral/Maxillofacial, Orthopedic surgery, Trauma and Neuroradiology.
Responsibilities:
+ Provides relevant information from the patient’s clinical record, observes, and notes clinical phenomena occurring during the Neuromonitoring recording. Monitors neurophysiologic central/peripheral functioning throughout the operative procedure.Ability to perform all technical aspects involved in intra-operative neuromonitoring.Prepares patients and performs complex intraoperative monitoring duties under no direction. Confers with the surgeon regarding structures at risk, modalities to be monitored, and documents the conversation.Provides continuous mentorship and training to all level 1 technicians.Assists in developing quality assurance programs to ensure up to date quality of patient assessments and high productivity.Participates in continuing education sessions and presents material as required and requested.Participates in continuing education sessions minimal 6 credits per year. 4 internal and 2 external from an approved educational body as per Penn Medicine professional development standard or minimum education required maintain credentials. Keeps ongoing documentation of education for annual review.Level II Technician understands critical periods when iatrogenic injury may occur involving the structures at risk, anatomy of monitored pathways, pre-operative deficits, intraoperative injuries, and possible post-operative outcomes. Complete knowledge of waveform changed generated by ischemia, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, core, and limb temperature.Knowledge of anesthetic agents and physiological changes desired patient data per modality.Recognizes and eliminates physiological artifacts and electrical interference from the recording. Monitors artifact that obscures the potentials under study that may interfere with the interpretation of the recording.Participates in the regular division meeting and is active in bringing solutions to problems.Communicates significant events and follows facility policy and procedure regarding critical test results: documenting in monitoring log throughout the monitoring process. The ability to recognize changes in physiological status or anesthetic adjustment relative to the INOM procedures.Monitors neurophysiologic central/peripheral functioning throughout the operative procedure.Performs duties in accordance with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and proceduresOther duties as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organizationIs vigilant regarding Infection Control Policy.Responsible for communicating/ordering when supply inventory is low.Participates in on call rotation-nights, holidays, and weekends.Responsible for routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
**Credentials:**
+ Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)
+ Registry in EEG or Registry in EP by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic Evoked Potential Technology (ABRET) (Required)
**Education or Equivalent Experience:**
+ H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
+ Associate of Arts or Science (Preferred)
+ Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited Neurodiagnostic Technology Program. And 2+ years Minimum of 2 years' experience as a technologist in the field of Neurodiagnostic technology (Required)
