Internship PPG Protective and Marine Coatings (Passive Fire Protection, PFP)
Several departments of Research & Development in Protective and Marine Coatings (PMC) are located in Amsterdam. The PFP team currently offers an internship for approximately 6-9 months, preferably starting April/May (if not, September) in 2025.
Intumescent coating is specifically formulated to protect vulnerable structures from the heat of fire hazards. When exposed to fire, the intumescent materials create a light and microporous char/foam that can insulate heat and fire to protect underlying substrates in residential and public buildings. They are designed to slow down the spread of fire and give occupants in the building more time to evacuate.
This research focuses on finding a new binder system for water-based intumescent coatings (PPG and benchmarks) with excellent outdoor durability. The candidate will examine the durability and fire performance of intumescent coatings by using different water-based binders and try to establish the relationship between the performance differences and the physical/chemical properties of both the coatings and the chemicals (decomposition, hydrophilicity, durability, fire performance,…). The aim is to identify the challenges and opportunities that may lead to new product development or new services to customers.

PPG PMC is located in Amsterdam. You will work in a diverse, international environment. Spoken and reporting are preferable in English. You will be mentored by a senior Product Development Specialist.
