Overview and team profile
The energy transition is the most impactful transition Northwest Europe is currently facing. This change is often an uncertain pathway affecting households, industry, energy production and transmission & distribution grids: sometimes we take two steps forward and then few steps backwards. At Arcadis, this transition is a key driver across many disciplines and client sectors. We focus on realizing our client’s projects contributing to the transition. Examples are grid extension projects, solutions to grid congestion, industry decarbonization, offshore wind, hydrogen projects and the integration of all those technologies in the new energy system.
While most of our project work focusses on project execution, we have a constant eye out for innovation and new concept development. Results of your contribution will be new tools or practices that will land in our business and/or white papers and insights to pro-actively distribute in the sector. As energy transition is spread broadly in our organization, we are looking for interns in a central innovation hub managed directly by our Director Energy. You will collaborate with multiple consulting teams and build on the expertise and insights of our broad organization.
What will you do
The innovation topics you will actually work on depend on our business needs, your personal preferences and -most of all- the current affairs in the industry. Topics our interns have recently worked on include: the innovation needs of the offshore wind sector to strengthen their business case, an assessment of the O&M changes foreseen for heavy industry, a recommended practice for the organization of district heating projects, a thorough assessment of EU’s power flexibility needs and the business case and bankability of hydrogen projects.
Regardless of the topic, you will work in close contact with experienced colleagues and will benefit from our industry network for your research. You are expected to work in one of our Dutch offices for multiple days per week, but have also the flexibility to work from home or the university (part time). You will report on your progress on a regular basis.
What we are looking for
We are looking for creative minds and proactive students that are driven by the impact of their work and have the analytical skills to dive into the details of their research. You are a team player and eager to reach out to colleagues and external thought leaders. You have a background in a relevant academic discipline, e.g.:
Energy Sciences Technology, Policy and Management Economics Physics or Mathematics Electrical Engineering Control Engineering Mechanical EngineeringWe prefer interns that stay with us for 6+ months and can accommodate standard internships as well as thesis projects. As our organization includes many disciplines that are highly Dutch-focussed, we have a preference for Dutch-speaking individuals, however, we will also consider those with fluent English who are also learning Dutch.
