Intern (d/f/m): Optimisation-based and probabilistic worst-case analysis of uncertain satellite systems

You are looking for an internship and want to get to know the work of an engineer (d/f/m)? Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in the AOCS/GNC & Flight Dynamics department as an intern (d/f/m)

Location: Immenstaad

Start: As soon as possible

Duration: 6 months

Topic

When a satellite’s control system is switched-on for the first time in orbit, it must operate as specified. Compared to other disciplines, in space, test campaigns within the final operational environment are not feasible. Even more, considering uncertainties within typical model-based robustness analyses is crucial, since every model of a real physical system is uncertain. Typical satellite uncertainties include mass properties or alignments.

The uncertainty analysis helps to quantify the influence of the uncertain parameters on system properties such as stability margins and pointing performance. One approach to uncertainty analysis is to identify the worst-case parameter-set that leads to the worst performance metrics, i.e., the worst pointing performance. Optimisation-based algorithms are generic tools to find these worst cases. Another approach is to assess the failure probability for given requirements. The analysis ends up in the computation of a probability integral through efficient numerical integration. Both approaches might find requirement violations more efficiently compared to traditional approaches such as Monte Carlo analysis.

You shall analyse advanced optimisation-based and probabilistic worst-case analysis for accelerating Verification and Validation (V&V) of satellite Attitude and Orbital Control Systems (AOCS). Based on the current literature, various optimisation algorithms and probability analysis methods shall be compiled into a toolbox architecture, which can interface with existing AOCS simulators and models. Current Earth-observation missions will serve as benchmark applications to test the effectiveness compared to traditional approaches.

You will learn about: Applied optimisation, uncertainty quantification, spacecraft attitude dynamics, robustness analysis.

Your location
