Summary Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Podiatry is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This position serves as an advance technician for outpatient care settings such as; specialty clinic and minor procedure room. As an ICT Podiatry the incumbent may serve in a medical center, community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC), mobile medical unit or may have virtual/remote assignments Responsibilities The incumbent performs ongoing patient care duties in an outpatient and inpatient clinical settings as well as minor procedures. ICTs may perform tasks as outlined in this Position Description (PD) and in accordance with local policies after documented completion of training and demonstration of appropriate skills and competency. These tasks are not all inclusive and require the demonstration of appropriate training and documented competence prior to their performance. The incumbent may assist with or perform other related approved technical health care procedures under the direction and supervision of the licensed personnel as competency is demonstrated and documented. Clinical responsibilities include but are not limited to: Assists licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex and specialized care needs. Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an outpatient setting. Performs treatments and interventions (i.e. nail debridement, callus paring, wound dressings). Performs wound care (i.e. bandaging, application of dressings, wound measurements and Photo-documentation of wounds and skin lesions). Assists with outpatient minor procedures that are not considered basic foot care. Participates in follow-up care such as wound check. Medication Administration Exp: topical, subcutaneous. Assists licensed staff with preparing patients for medical evaluation, setting up equipment, passing instruments and providing treatment during in-person or virtual visits. Operates specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes. Uses doppler ultrasound for arterial examination of the lower extremity. Performs 12-lead electrocardiograms. Provides patient education within scope of care or while providing an intervention. (Examples: post-procedural care, diabetic foot education, and wound care). Conducts or assists with the training of personnel in if appropriately trained, certified and/or qualified. Performs observation-based screening and collection of patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel. Completes approved templates and tools, such as normal result notes and follow up treatment protocols established by the agency. Performs Vital Signs and Point of Care Testing. Thoroughly and appropriately documents actions, interventions and procedures in the medical record. (Examples: Procedural notes, progress notes, screenings, photo documentation and secure messaging.). Generally, the work requires recurring physical exertion with assisting patients. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-7 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-6 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Collects a wide range of lab specimens and prepares them for transfer to the lab for processing. Takes vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, etc.); Documents in the Electronic Health Record actions, interventions, and procedures using appropriate templates and tools; Performs 12-Lead EKG; Administers intramuscular, oral, topical, eye drops, ear drops, intranasal, rectal suppositories, local anesthetics, nebulized medications, subcutaneous and intradermal; Assists patient with mobility utilizing Safe Patient Handling equipment. There is no educational substitution for the GS-7 level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
