Hartnell College is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in California. Founded in 1920 as Salinas Junior College, the school was renamed Hartnell College in 1948, and the Hartnell Community College District was established the following year. The College is preparing to join with its students, employees, alums and the greater community to celebrate its Centennial, beginning in Fall 2019. Hartnell moved into a new building on its current 54-acre site, at 411 Central Ave. in Salinas in 1936. The Main Campus is located in Monterey County, just a 25-minute drive from the scenic Monterey Peninsula and the Monterey Regional Airport. Its Alisal Campus in east Salinas, opened in 2014, houses its Agricultural Business and Technology Institute, its Sustainable Design and Construction Center, a diesel program, an automotive technology program and its computer science program. Hartnell also holds classes at its education center in King City, opened in 2002, and at numerous off-campus locations in north and south Monterey County. Thanks to a $167 million local bond measure – known as Measure T – approved by district voters in 2016, it is preparing to expand that facility and open new centers in Soledad and Castroville, as well as a new state-of-the-art building for its nursing and allied health programs on the Main Campus. Along with renovation of two classroom buildings and new landscaping, also on the Main Campus, those projects are scheduled for completion by 2021. The College serves the Salinas Valley, a fertile agricultural region some 10 miles wide and 100 miles long, as well as part of southern San Benito County. It draws most of its annual enrollment of 17,000 students from Salinas and the communities of Bradley, Castroville, Chualar, Gonzales, Greenfield, Jolon, King City, Lockwood, Moss Landing, San Ardo, San Lucas and Soledad. Students also come from Monterey Peninsula communities and elsewhere in California’s Central Coast, as well as from other states and countries. DESCRIPTION:
Under general policy direction, plans, organizes, directs and integrates instruction and operations of the programs, services and activities of an assigned academic instructional division; oversees educational planning and curriculum development in accordance with the District's missions, goals and objectives; coordinates assigned academic area, programs and services with other District divisions, officials, outside agencies and the public; fosters cooperative working relationships among District divisions and with various public and private groups; provides highly responsible and complex professional assistance to the Vice President of Instruction in areas of expertise; and performs related duties as assigned.
Examples of Duties
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
• Plans, organizes, directs, controls, integrates and evaluates the work of faculty, classified managers and staff in an assigned academic instructional division; with academic administrators, managers and staff, develops, implements and evaluates assigned division educational and program plans, goals and objectives in accordance with District goals and objectives; contributes to the development of annual general-fund and grant-funded budgets and tracks division performance against funding allocations to ensure compliance with legal mandates; manages and directs development, implementation and evaluation of work processes, systems and procedures to achieve annual goals, objectives and work standards.
• Directs and manages the selection of full-time and adjunct faculty and divisional staff; coordinates associated processes with Human Resources; conducts and/or facilitates new faculty and/or staff orientations; encourages continuing professional development; works with employees on performance issues; oversees, facilitates in faculty, staff, student and community conflict resolution and grievance processes.
• Oversees and ensures the timely evaluation of faculty and staff and reviews work for acceptability and conformance with District and area standards, including program and project priorities and performance evaluations; chairs and oversees faculty tenure and four-year probationary evaluation and review processes; serves on tenure-track search committees.
• Develops, analyzes and implements curriculum standards to meet student needs and compliance with established curriculum and content standards and requirements; provides technical advice on changes and modification of curriculum and transfer articulation proposals; oversees development and implementation of new courses, programs and instructional activities; budgets and allocates teaching units, oversees class scheduling and monitors enrollment and actual teaching units against approved budgets.
• With faculty, staff and administration, ensures compliance with California Code of Regulations Title 5, accreditation standards, Board Policies and Administrative Procedures; oversees and participates in reviewing equity and student learning outcomes and assessments; fosters quality instruction and optimal functioning of programs; develops and updates reports and data-tracking success measures for curriculum, courses and programs in area of responsibility; ensures timely and accurate reporting of mandated reports and data.
• Facilitates grant and external funding identification and applications; ensures proposals meet funding agency requirements and priorities; develops forecasts and budgets for staffing and equipment requirements including forecasting of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment materials and supplies; directs the monitoring of and approves expenditures; directs and implements adjustments as necessary.
• Develops external partnerships and provides leadership in the coordination of state, local and regional collaborations; represents the District and division in community outreach activities.
• Leads and participates in various District committees and advisory boards; makes presentations to the Board of Trustees, Cabinet and to other District groups.
• Oversees and participates in conducting a variety of analytical and operational studies regarding programmatic activities; prepares comprehensive technical records and reports, identifies alternatives and makes and justifies recommendations.
• As Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences: directs and oversees management of academic programs in Health Sciences fields including Respiratory Care Practitioner, Registered Nursing, Vocational Nursing, Bachelors in Nursing, Emergency Medical Technician, and other similar programs; may act as Director of Nursing.
• May serve as a designee for the Vice President, of Instruction when assigned.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
• Master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in nursing, education, or administration.
• Registered Nurses license in the State of California
• One (1) year of experience in an administrative position; two (2) years' experience teaching in pre- or post-licensure nursing programs; one (1) year of experience as a registered nurse providing direct patient care and/or the equivalent as determined by the Board of Registered Nursing.
• Preference may be given to candidates who possess minimum of three (3) years' experience as an RN, one (1) year of which is teaching and/or clinical supervision in a state accredited school of registered, vocational, or practical nursing or psychiatric technician school within the last five years OR a minimum of three (3) years' experience in nursing administration or nursing education within the last five years, and completion of courses in administration, teaching methods, and curriculum development.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• Hold a current California active license as a Registered Nurse.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Ph.D. in Nursing Education from an accredited college or university.
• Progressively responsible administrative experience in an accredited institution of higher education, preferably in a community college.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:This is a regular, interim, full-time educational management position for one academic year (2025 - 2026). Management salary range III: $157,798.00 to $191,804.00 annually (within this salary range, the successful candidate's starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience).
