ITS/ATMS Engineer | Washington D.C. | Tysons Corner, VA |Richmond, VA | Williamsburg, VA | Virginia Beach, VA

 

VHB is seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)/ Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) Project Engineer to join our expanding Transportation Systems Group in the Mid-Atlantic region. In this role, you’ll be a key contributor to the planning, documentation, design, and construction support of advanced ITS infrastructure—including power and communication systems that drive smarter, safer, and more sustainable mobility.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead the development of ITS/ATMS and traffic signal design plansPerform traffic engineering and task management to deliver a wide variety of traffic engineering and ITS/ATMS projects Prepare technical specifications and construction cost estimatesDevelop electrical one-line diagrams and conduct electrical system calculations, including voltage drop, arc flash, and short circuit analysesPrepare Power Design Analysis Reports for ITS infrastructurePrepare communication/networking plans and fiber splicing plansDevelop key systems engineering documentation, including:Concept of Operations (ConOps)Systems Engineering Management Plans (SEMP)Requirements Traceability Verification Matrix (RTVM)Conduct field work such as data collection and site investigationsCoordinate with clients, project stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teamsSupport business development and marketing effortsManage and mentor junior staff in the successful delivery of project tasks

SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

Have 5+ years experience in ITS design and/or system development which could include:Traffic signal plansCommunication plansNetwork planning/architectureProficient with data analysis tools such as ExcelFamiliarity with design platforms including OpenRoads Designer (ORD), MicroStation, and AutoCADExcellent communication skills—written, verbal, and interpersonalCollaborative team player with the ability to work independentlySelf-driven with a strong work ethic and passion for continuous learningAbility to manage multiple projects and deliver high-quality work on time

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Systems, or Electrical Engineering required; a focus in the field of Transportation is preferred5–8+ years of ITS/ATMS engineering experience requiredFamiliarity with state DOT processes and standards preferredProfessional Engineer (P.E.) License required

The base salary range for this position is $90,000 - 125,000 for the Washington, DC location. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
