Job Summary:
The Art, Theatre and Dance (ATD) Department requests an Instructor of Theatre and Costume Shop Manager position. While the majority of this position will focus on managing the costume shop, supervising the student workers, and overseeing theatre and dance production costume needs, the position will also involve teaching in core and foundational theatre courses. The position would require a 1 course teaching load each fall and spring semester, with the remainder of teaching load assigned to costume shop management responsibilities.
Work Performed:
Supervises undergraduate student workers and assigns Practicum students.
Work with costume faculty in establishing budgets, assigning projects, developing teaching opportunities, developing students’ professional practices, establishing guidelines for designers, and ensuring designer packages are complete.
Support theatre and dance production through supervising measurements, fittings, and overseeing builds. Utilize renderings provided by the costume designer to create costumes by draping, patterning, and sewing. Assign costume projects to student workers based on skill and educational need.
Supervise Wardrobe Head and Wardrobe Crew. Schedule Quick change rehearsals and coordinate backstage costume activities: preparing crew, overseeing costume laundry, and overseeing strike.
Maintain costume shop supplies and equipment. Purchase fabrics and materials/supplies for shop use. Make repairs, replacements, and maintenance of shop equipment. Attend costume parade and dress rehearsals, as necessary.
Maintain control over the costume storage facility and stock. Facilitatecostume rentals, including scheduling, communication, creating invoices and confirmation of payment of rentals.
Attend all production meetings for theatre and dance.
Necessary Qualifications:
Master’s Degree with a minimum of 18 graduate hours earned in Theatre
Minimum 1 year of undergraduate teaching experienceSewing, patterning, and draping experience
Preferred Qualifications:
MFA in Costume Technology or Design1-3 years of costume shop management or supervision experience
2-3 years of undergraduate teaching experienceExperience working in a university or professional costume shop, Millinery, wig, and craft experience.
