Job Summary
The Department of Horticulture is seeking a combination position of an Instructor and an Educational Program Coordinator & Recruiter. The incumbent will hold two appointments, a 0.50 FTE , fixed term, 12-month Instructor position, with reappointment at the discretion of the Department Head, and a 0.50 FTE , Educational Program Coordinator & Recruiter, a 12-month, professional faculty position, reflecting duties in both academic and administrative areas.

The Instructor position will provide instruction of face-to-face laboratory courses material in the Department of Horticulture Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban Horticulture Program Option (with an emphasis on Landscape and Urban Horticulture) at the Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture. This position will contribute to the development of new courses and revision of existing laboratory courses material provided at this facility. These laboratories will emphasis activities to prepare students for activities at the National Association of Landscape Professionals ( NALP ) – National Collegiate Landscape Competition.
The incumbent should foster student critical thinking and advance student’s knowledge and skills in urban horticulture and landscape management. This will be done by designing, maintaining, and carrying out educational program activities to ensure an intellectual foundation for students.
The Educational Program Coordinator and Recruiter position will assist in educational, research and outreach activities at the Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture( OCCUH ) to further develop the Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban Horticulture Program Option degree options, with an emphasis on Landscape management and urban horticulture.
The position will also be responsible for coordinating internship opportunities and developing and executing a recruitment plan and activities to increase enrollment of undergraduate students in the program.

Key Responsibilities
50%Program Coordinator and Recruiter for the Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban Horticulture Program Option and the Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture
+ Work closely with the Horticulture Department academic advisor(s) and Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban Horticulture Faculty to align curriculum, with a focus on landscape management and urban horticulture.
+ Coordinate internship opportunities for students by connecting employers with students and vice versa, visit students during their internships, provide internship oversight and grade internship reports related to the Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban Horticulture option.
+ Coordinate course laboratories, and coordinate/lead adult education events (field days, workshops, site visits and tours) at the Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture.
+ Participate in advising and mentoring students within the Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban Horticulture option, and the Landscape and Urban Horticulture Undergraduate Club.
+ Mentor students attending industry events such as the National Association of Landscape Professionals ( NALP ) – National Collegiate Landscape Competition and NALP ELEVATE meeting.
+ Establish new and/or enhance existing collaborations with community colleges and high schools and be the liaison to develop a flow-through program for students from high school through BS degree options.
+ Develop and execute a recruitment plan and activities to increase enrollment of undergraduate and graduate students in the Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban Horticulture option.
+ Provide mentoring and opportunities for students from underrepresented groups; enable the advancement of diverse perspectives; and promote equitable outcomes among learners of diverse and underrepresented identity groups.
+ Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, including efforts promoting equitable outcomes among learners of diverse and underrepresented identity groups.
45% Instruction
Develop curriculum and provide instruction for 3-4 urban horticulture and landscaping courses (new and existing) that train, engage and challenge students learning through on-campus laboratories. This includes on campus, and PACE (continuing education) courses. The incumbent is expected to contribute to DEI initiatives including:

What You Will Need
Minimum Qualifications for Instructor Position:
+ MS in horticulture, agronomy or a closely related field with a focus on urban horticulture or landscape management.
+ Demonstrated knowledge of urban horticulture and landscape management practices
+ Demonstrable teaching skills.
+ Demonstrated organizational skills.
+ Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications for Educational Program Coordinator & Recruiter Position:
+ MS in horticulture or a closely related field with an emphasis on urban horticulture and landscape management.
+ Minimum 2 years of experience in areas such as outreach, client engagement, and/or promotion in urban horticulture or landscape management.
+ Commitment to promoting and enhancing cultural diversity, educational equity, and inclusion.
+ Demonstrated organizational skills.
+ Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
+ Ability to organize large and complex events, such as preparing for the National Collegiate Landscape Competition and hosting industry advisory and partnership events.
+ A strong command of numerous technologies used in the Landscape Design/Build/Manage profession, including design and business-related software.
+ Verifiable knowledge and training in the operation of heavy landscape construction equipment such as trucks, trailers, tractors, excavators, and power tools such as saws, drills, etc.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

+ Past National Association of Landscape Professionals ( NALP ) – National Collegiate Landscape Competition attendance and participation.

Preferred Qualifications for Educational Program Coordinator & Recruiter Position:
+ Previous work experience in Urban Horticulture or Landscape Management.
+ Previous experience in student activities programming, mentoring, or advising.
+ Evidence of team-building skills, capacity for successful collaboration and potential to manage large multidisciplinary projects.
+ Evidence of existing professional relationships locally and nationally in the green industry and ability to leverage, resulting in internships and full-time employment for our students.
+ Ability to use existing relationships to cultivate gifts to the Turfgrass, Landscape and Urban Horticulture option, the Landscape and Urban Horticulture Undergraduate Club, the Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture. and the Department of Horticulture.
+ Familiarity with high school Horticulture programs, 2-year programs, groups such as FFA , and 4H.
+ Previous participation in the National Collegiate Landscape Competition or similar student/industry events.
+ Experience organizing and managing large and complex events and ability to remain organized in a fast moving and dynamic setting.
+ Experience with social media platforms
+ Experience managing student clubs and activities
+ Ability to manage industry stakeholder needs and relationships
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Working Conditions for Instructor Position:
This work will occur in classrooms, open spaces, greenhouses and offices at the Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture.
Working Conditions for Educational Program Coordinator & Recruiter Position:
This work will occur in office spaces of the Department of Horticulture. Travel will occasionally be required for student recruitment and educational program coordination and outreach with academic partners.
