Instructional Support Technician
Instructional Support Technician **Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume)** : Bachelor's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Two (2) years practical full-time research/work experience in an academic or industrial laboratory setting. Experience with safety and compliance regulations in a laboratory setting. Highly proficient, professional experience in word processing, spreadsheet management, electronic messaging, and internet applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Google Apps, etc.) **Preferred Qualifications:** Advanced Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Chemistry or closely related discipline. Additional years of practical experience in a chemical or chemical biology laboratory. Experience with hazardous laboratory waste disposal. Experience in a laboratory environment including oversight and maintenance of instruments. Experience using procurement software systems such as Wolfmart. Experience managing safety hazards such as but not limited to, fire, cryogenics, compressed gasses, laser and biohazards. **Brief Description of Duties:** The Instructional Support Technician will support all aspects of laboratory safety for approximately 135 teaching and research laboratories within the Chemistry department. The Instructional Support Technician will maintain the Chemical Biology Instrumentation Lab including record keeping, repairs, maintenance and training of users. Outstanding written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience successfully working independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving. + Safety: + Support a culture of safety in all areas of the Chemistry building especially research and teaching laboratories. Identifying opportunities to enhance safe laboratory practices with focus on chemical and biosafety. + Oversee and provide support for removal of hazardous waste. Inspects, and recommends improvements to chemical storage. + Maintain departmental Safety website. + Serve on the Safety Committee and oversee the LSO group. + Coordinate Chem Safety Day + Conduct and keep records on periodic lab inspections and follow-ups. + Oversee lab cleanouts and closeouts. + Arrange with ERM for training sessions on safe laboratory practices. + Oversee high hazard storage rooms in the Chemistry building. + Inform faculty and staff of current government safety regulations and trends in laboratory safety. + Instrumentation: + Inspect, operate, calibrate, maintain, repair and modify instrumentation of the Chemical Biology Shared Instrumentation Lab on a routine basis. Repairs may be mechanical or electronic in nature and may require collaboration with University shops or instrument manufacturers. + Maintain records of instrument and equipment usage and maintenance including a preventive maintenance schedule. + Instruct students on instrument operations. Maintain instrument-training records. + Work with Property Control to assure proper disposal of equipment and instrumentation as necessary. + Oversee and support other Chemistry Department research support facilities as required. + Compliance: + Implement safety policies of the University and Department. + Assure that all laboratories have required permits and registration as required by University EHS policy and government regulation. + Refer to EH&S regarding any respirator requests, shipping of dangerous goods or any radiation safety related questions. + Maintain safety training records and inform people of required retraining. + Assure that all safety equipment is certified per requirements. + Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. **Special Notes:** This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
