Instructional Designer
Support Center - Irving

The Instructional Designer is responsible for the design, development, and execution of scalable learning experiences that align with Michaels’ business objectives. This role supports training needs across multiple functions—including Retail Store Operations, Merchandising, Sourcing, and enterprise Talent programs—through thoughtful design and exceptional execution. The Instructional Designer collaborates with subject matter experts (SMEs), business leaders, and stakeholders to deliver learning solutions across multiple modalities, ensuring accessibility, effectiveness, and alignment with business priorities.

Major Activities

Instructional Design & Content Development

Design and develop engaging learning content for e-learning, instructor-led training (ILT), virtual instructor-led training (vILT), videos, job aids, and other performance support tools.Apply instructional design models (ADDIE, SAM) and adult learning principles to meet business outcomes.Conduct training needs assessments in collaboration with SMEs and business partners to define learning objectives, learner profiles, and performance goals.Storyboard, script, and build interactive e-learning modules using Articulate 360 (Rise and Storyline), Vyond, Canva, and other digital tools.Create training materials for a variety of initiatives, including:Product Knowledge for Store Team MembersMerchandising Function TrainingSystems training (e.g., Product Lifecycle Management)Enterprise Talent & Development initiativesEnsure consistency in branding, tone, and instructional quality across all learning assets.Develop and manage templates, style guides, and content repositories to support efficient updates and scalability.

Training Delivery & Execution

Deploy trainings through Workday Learning or other LMS tools, ensuring proper audience alignment and business cadence (ongoing, just-in-time, or campaign-based).Test content and troubleshoot technical issues before launch to ensure smooth learner experience.Partner with key stakeholders to gain approvals, track completions, and report on training progress and impact.Maintain up-to-date knowledge of instructional technologies and best practices in content delivery.

Collaboration & Project Management

Work cross-functionally with Store Operations, Merchandising, HR, Talent Management, and external vendors to deliver business-driven training solutions.Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines, quality standards, and business goals.Participate in regular content reviews, revisions, and pilot feedback loops to ensure programs are effective and relevant.Act as a thought partner to identify innovative training solutions that boost learner engagement and retention.

Learning Evaluation & Continuous Improvement

Design assessments and feedback tools to measure learner comprehension and content effectiveness.Analyze learner feedback and usage data to identify improvements and update content accordingly.Support survey deployment, feedback analysis, and reporting to key stakeholders.Partner with analytics teams to monitor engagement, retention, and learning outcomes.

LMS Administration & Support

Upload, organize, and maintain learning assets in Workday Learning.Perform testing and troubleshooting prior to publishing training to ensure system compatibility and optimal user experience.Cross-train on LMS functionality and provide support for learning tickets and technical inquiries.Maintain version control and training audit readiness.

Accessibility & Compliance

Ensure content complies with WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards and DEI expectations.Maintain compliance with regulatory training (e.g., OSHA, harassment prevention).Support legal and audit requests by ensuring materials are accurate and up-to-date.

Preferred Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Communications, Human Resources, or related field—or equivalent professional experience

Minimum Type of Experience Required

3+ years of experience in instructional design and learning development, ideally in a corporate or retail environmentExperience in designing for multiple modalities (e-learning, ILT, vILT, blended, microlearning)Experience with product training, operations training, or systems training preferred

Other

Proficiency in Articulate 360 (Rise & Storyline), Canva, Vyond, and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator)Experience with Workday Learning (strongly preferred)Familiarity with SCORM compliance, digital accessibility, and LMS platform functionalityStrong writing, editing, and storytelling skillsStrong organizational, project management, and multitasking skillsExcellent interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative mindsetCustomer-focused with a passion for creating learner-centric experiencesAbility to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities
