Position Details Position Information Position Title Instructional Assistant – Veterinary Technician (Part Time, Temporary Hourly, Non-Benefited) Classification Title Temporary PT Hourly Hourly rate, Stipend, or Load Unit $30/hour Close Date Open Until Filled Yes Open Until Filled Notes Open For 2025-2026 Academic Year Position Type/Employee Class Temporary PT Hourly Instructor Status Not applicable Overtime Eligible Non-Exempt FLSA Status Campus Location Redmond Primary Purpose The Instructional Assistant will serve as an Instructional and Lab Assistant; assist the primary course instructor in the education of students using state approved criteria to teach, select and conduct hands on learning experiences appropriate for meeting objective for the classroom. Under direction of and providing support to faculty by preparing labs, organizing supplies/equipment, observing and documenting student performance and testing and in some courses, assisting with the care of veterinary clinic animals. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Prepare laboratory environments for instruction by assembling necessary materials, equipment, and supplies. Assist faculty with demonstrations, student observation, and evaluation of essential skills performance. Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities, including student progress toward instructional goals. Reinforce knowledge and skills introduced by course faculty through guided practice and support. Handle animals for instructional use in applicable courses. Monitor the health and well-being of animals in applicable courses. Feed, clean, and provide basic care for animals in applicable courses. Clean and maintain instructional laboratory equipment. Assist with post-lab cleanup and resetting of laboratory spaces. Support faculty with administrative tasks such as photocopying, stapling, hole-punching, and organizing materials or supplies. Perform other duties as assigned. Department Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies. Thorough knowledge in the field of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Technician and/or Veterinary Technician Training and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge. Desire to advocate for all species and work with the species referenced in the classwork or lab (large, small, exotics, lab, birds, etc.). Knowledge of and vision of the Certified Veterinary Technician’s role in the veterinary profession. Visual ability, corrected, to enable assistants to observe, direct, and supervise students in laboratory situations. Have sensory and physical requirements related to performing the essential functions of a veterinary technician. Ability to effectively use Microsoft platform desktop computer and various software including Microsoft Office and Outlook, with potential to learn Canvas learning management system. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members. Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students, faculty and staff and the willingness to work as a member of a team. Excellent oral, written and electronic communication skills. Willingness to travel and/or teach at various hours and locations, as required. Must be well-organized, self-motivated, and dependable. Ability to perform a variety of tasks daily. Ergonomic Requirements Work is performed in a laboratory, in the field with large animal partners, or in the veterinary technician training facility. Mainly standing and walking during labs. The employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Must be able to kneel, stoop, crawl, and crouch. Physical movements may involve lifting objects up to 40lbs. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation Minimum Requirements Current Oregon License as a Veterinarian or Certified Veterinary Technician by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Examining Board (by the time of hire). Veterinary Technician applicants must have an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology or Veterinary Technician from an accredited institution, have passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) and be a credentialed Veterinary Technician. Minimum of 1 year of experience working as a licensed Veterinarian or Certified Veterinary Technician with the handling and management of animals. Preferred Qualifications Prior work experience of approximately 3 years, where veterinary technician skills have been applied and practiced. Experience in teaching, coaching, or assisting in a laboratory setting. Knowledge of teaching and instruction of adult learners, various audiences and group dynamics.
