Job Description

Job Summary:

The Roads Inspector for an Infrastructure Works Project is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the quality, compliance, and safety of road construction activities throughout the project. This role involves inspecting construction materials, workmanship, and processes related to the construction of roads, pavements, drainage systems, and associated infrastructure. The Roads Inspector ensures that all work is carried out in accordance with project specifications, design drawings, industry standards, and regulatory requirements. They work closely with contractors, engineers, and project management teams to maintain high-quality standards and prevent any defects or delays in roadworks.

Key Job Duties:

Road Construction Inspections:Conduct routine inspections of road construction activities, ensuring that all work, including excavation, grading, paving, and drainage, complies with project plans, specifications, and quality standards.Inspect road materials (e.g., asphalt, aggregates, concrete) to ensure they meet the required quality and are sourced from approved suppliers.Verify that the installation of road features, such as curbs, sidewalks, drainage systems, and road signs, is in accordance with design specifications and safety standards.Material Quality Control:Supervise the testing and inspection of construction materials used in roadworks, ensuring compliance with industry standards and project specifications.Review material certifications, test results, and delivery records to ensure that all materials used on-site are approved and meet quality requirements.Ensure proper storage and handling of materials on-site to prevent contamination or degradation.Construction Methodology Verification:Verify that the construction methods used by contractors are in line with the approved methodology, ensuring that work is completed to the highest standards.Ensure that all equipment and machinery used for roadworks are functioning properly and are appropriate for the tasks they are assigned.Monitor adherence to traffic management plans and ensure that roadworks do not cause unnecessary disruptions to traffic flow.Documentation & Reporting:Maintain accurate records of inspections, test results, materials used, and construction activities.Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly inspection reports, documenting findings, issues, and any non-conformance related to roadworks.Report any defects or discrepancies to the project manager and recommend corrective actions.Site Safety & Compliance Monitoring:Ensure that road construction activities are carried out in compliance with safety regulations, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.Monitor safety conditions on-site, ensuring that traffic control, road closures, and pedestrian safety measures are in place and maintained.Conduct regular safety inspections and assist in addressing any hazards or unsafe conditions on the worksite.Progress Monitoring & Coordination:Monitor the progress of road construction work to ensure that it is completed on time and within the allocated budget.Coordinate with contractors and project managers to resolve any issues that could impact the timeline or quality of roadworks.Provide feedback on the progress of construction and recommend actions to address any delays or challenges.Environmental & Regulatory Compliance:Ensure that roadworks comply with environmental regulations, including measures for dust control, noise reduction, and waste management.Monitor the implementation of erosion and sediment control plans to prevent environmental contamination during construction activities.Ensure compliance with local regulatory requirements related to road construction, such as permits, environmental permits, and land use agreements.Final Inspections & Handover:Assist in the final inspection of completed roadworks, ensuring that the project is ready for handover to the client or regulatory authorities.Prepare and document the as-built conditions of roads, pavements, drainage systems, and other infrastructure for project closeout.Ensure that all punch list items are completed and that any defects or outstanding work are addressed prior to project completion.Problem Resolution & Quality Improvement:Identify and resolve quality issues and defects in roadworks, coordinating with contractors to ensure that any non-compliance is rectified quickly and efficiently.Proactively recommend improvements in construction techniques or materials to enhance the quality and durability of road infrastructure.Assist in implementing lessons learned from previous projects to improve quality control and inspection procedures on future roadworks.Stakeholder Communication:Communicate regularly with project managers, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure that road construction activities are aligned with project objectives.Attend site meetings to provide updates on inspection findings and discuss any issues that may impact the project schedule or quality.

Qualifications

Education:

Technical Institute Diploma / Bachelor's degree in relevant Engineering field (i.e. Civil, Structural, etc.)

Experience:

The ideal candidate to be Civil Engineering graduate with minimum 7 years' experience in similar projectsRelevant experience in comparable roads and bridges projectsDemonstrated experience in quality control and inspection of road construction materials and methodologiesProven track record in ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations on construction sites

Skills and Knowledge:

In-depth knowledge of road construction techniques, materials, and industry standardsProficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, specifications, and contract documentsStrong understanding of local and national regulations related to road construction and safetyExcellent problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions in challenging situationsStrong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
