Gault Nature Reserve
 

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Administration, the Infrastructure Supervisor is responsible for the oversight of all maintenance, repair and infrastructure operations across the Gault Nature Reserve’s buildings, lands, trails, and equipment. This role oversees logistics and contributes to infrastructure planning to align operational needs with the Reserve and University’s priorities, goals and objectives. This includes supervising building and grounds staff, liaising with external providers and internal stakeholders, and ensuring compliance with building and safety codes, municipal by-laws and regulations, and University policies and procedures.
 

Primary Responsibilities:

Supervise and direct the work of building and grounds workers to ensure optimal maintenance of Gault facilities.

Manage the physical resources of the Gault Nature Reserve, including buildings, lands, trails, equipment, and infrastructure.  This includes 21 buildings and structures (including a conference center, a research center, 2 dormitories, a cafeteria, 2 residences, a workshop garage, and other secondary buildings) totalling 4,335 square meters spread over a service area of ​​50 hectares.

Oversee and liaise with external suppliers for facility maintenance and infrastructure work. Obtain quotes and make purchases for Gault in line with McGill's purchasing policies and procedures.

Ensure proper upkeep and renovations in natural ecosystems, including trail maintenance, ecological restoration, and signage installation, while respecting conservation guidelines on the property, totalling more than 1000 hectares.

Oversee a fleet of vehicles and equipment. This includes motorized equipment such as a generator, pump, chainsaws, and various workshop equipment for plumbing, electricity, carpentry, and metalworking (welding).

Collaborate with a team of multi-disciplinary managers to align facility operations with broader conservation and research objectives.

Ensure compliance with building codes and municipal by-laws related to construction and maintenance.

Apply conservation principles in infrastructure projects to maintain ecological integrity while supporting research, teaching and public access.

Assist in balancing public access with conservation priorities through infrastructure planning and maintenance strategies.

Act as a liaison with researchers, particularly McGill University, to support fieldwork needs.

Support administrative processes related to funding and regulatory requirements, ensuring facility projects align with conservation standards. This includes participation in requesting permits and authorizations for projects.

Assist with yearly budget planning related to building, trails, equipment and infrastructure revenues and expenses.

On-call availability outside regular working hours, including nights and weekends, to intervene in case of emergencies or infrastructure problems, and special activities.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Demonstrated experience in facility and infrastructure planning and maintenance, preferably in a natural or conservation-based setting.

Working knowledge of building systems and codes, health and safety regulations, and environmental compliance.

Knowledge of ecological conservation practices, a strong asset.

Proven experience supervising maintenance teams and organizing day-to-day operations.

Experience working and interacting with a variety of clients, including external contractors, suppliers, municipal services, staff, researchers and the public.

Familiarity and/or interest in scientific research and field education operations, an asset.

Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and make decisions.

Ability to work under pressure on multiple activities/projects, with competing priorities and deadlines.

Must be client-focused with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Goal-oriented, autonomous and a self-starter requiring minimal supervision.

Strong analytical background and project management skills.

Ability to work on-call during evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Strong knowledge of Microsoft office tools including Excel, Word, Teams, Adobe Acrobat. Familiarity with Minerva and McGill Marketplace, an asset.

Driver’s license required (class 5).

Bilingual; excellent verbal and written communication skills, in both French (Level 4) and English (Level 3).
