Position Title: ALCC Individual Placements - USFS Timber Marking Crew Member

Conservation Legacy Program: Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps

Site Location: Flagstaff, AZ

4373 S Lake Mary Rd, Flagstaff AZ 86005

Terms of Service:

Start Date: September 2025 End Date:  August 2026 AmeriCorps Slot Classification: SATA - 1700hrs

Purpose:

The Flagstaff RD, Timber Program is one of the most active timber programs in the country.  We have a very dedicated and proactive program that seeks to increase pace and scale of forest restoration activities and fuels reduction projects.  Our current program is focused on laying out, painting and implementing projects that directly impact and protect the Upper Rio de Flag watershed, the City of Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks Wilderness.  There are many different facets that go into planning, preparing and implementing these types of restoration projects and all members of the Flagstaff Timber Program are actively involved.  The process for this work starts in the Silviculture shop where they inventory the predetermined project areas and develop silvicultural prescriptions that outline what types of treatments should occur on these dedicated areas. We then walk these units and lay them out based on operational feasibility. Next is to paint and GPS the boundaries.  Then we use the prescriptions to paint the trees that are to stay or go. Once all that is done, a contract is constructed, advertised and awarded. Then the logging and service work begins.

Description of Duties:

The Interns here will be included in all of the different steps involved in the development of these projects but will be mainly focused in the presale portion of the project planning.  That means working on layout and marking of the units.  These steps determine which areas will be harvested, which trees will be cut and which trees will stay.  This is great responsibility and will impact the local forest stands, the local community and the larger ecosystem.
One aspect that gets overlooked in the world of presale is how much these interns will be exposed to all of the other natural factors and resources that are involved in Natural Resource Management. While planning and implementing this work, presale members are constantly reviewing documents that are provided that highlight areas to look at, things of concern or practices that need to be put in place.  These focus on things like Threatened or Endangered Species, Stream Management Zones, Erosion Control Measures or Archaeological Sites.
Interns as part of the presale team will gain a large understanding of the foundation work that goes into Timber Sales, Forest Restoration activities and Fuels Reduction work that protects our communities and forests. They may not be working directly with the public, but they will impact the landscape that public will use and live with for decades to come.

Interns will be focused on learning how to read and understand silvicultural prescriptions, initial project layout and GPSing, traditional logging feasibility constraints, hauling and road maintenance needs as well as a variety of timber marking techniques and timber cruising methods. It can be expected that interns will have been exposed to the full gambit of presale activities during their time here.  Majority of that time will be spent marking timber and timber cruising. This work is the crux to developing these projects and they will be integral in completing some high priority projects.
