HVAC Mechanic
Job Description Job Summary


The HVAC Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems to ensure a safe, comfortable, and compliant environment for patients, staff, and visitors. This role performs routine preventive maintenance, emergency response repairs, and system monitoring across facility equipment in alignment with regulatory and organizational standards.

Essential Functions

Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs HVAC/R systems including air handlers, chillers, boilers, compressors, pumps, VAV systems, and related components. Responds promptly to urgent service requests involving HVAC issues, leaks, equipment failures, and facility emergencies such as hazardous spills, fire alarms, and weather-related needs. Performs scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC/R systems and associated infrastructure; documents findings and initiates corrective work orders as needed. Monitors, tests, and adjusts building automation systems (BAS) and environmental controls to ensure energy efficiency and optimal performance. Orders and tracks inventory and parts for repairs and maintenance activities; ensures timely documentation of labor, materials, and task completion. Completes Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA) prior to performing work in patient care areas to maintain safety and compliance. Identifies and reports potential facility issues while navigating facility spaces; creates or completes work orders to address issues found. Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and compliance checks in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

3-5 years of experience in commercial or healthcare facility HVAC/R maintenance required Experience working in a hospital or medical facility preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing HVAC/R systems, including electrical and control systems. Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal building codes and environmental regulations. Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and equipment manuals. Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills. Effective communication and documentation skills. Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS). Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple tasks. Commitment to safety and infection prevention protocols in healthcare environments.

Licenses and Certifications

Active Refrigeration, Universal, or Healthcare Mechanic license/certification or obtained within the first two (2) years of employment required EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification (EPA 608) required Certified Concrete Paver Installer - ICPI within 90 days of employment required BCLS - Basic Life Support required Certified HVAC Technician preferred
