Corteva Agriscience is looking for a responsible and highly motivated Horticultural Specialist to join the Facilities team at the Georgetown site in Caledon, Ontario. This research station is home to the world’s largest canola research greenhouse as well as a field-based breeding program. Under general supervision of Horticultural Lead, the Horticultural Specialist will conduct plant care, equipment maintenance, sourcing, and integrated pest management (IPM).
What You'll Do:
Conduct a wide range of greenhouse tasks with the goal of optimizing production of Canola research trials (daily plant care, installation and upkeep of greenhouse equipment, collection and interpretation of greenhouse climate data)
Apply the principles of Integrated Pest Management (scouting and identification of insect pest species, monitoring of pest populations, threshold-based decision making and application of pesticides and biological controls) alongside two other full-time horticultural specialists
Hire, train and supervise a group of 3-4 students on a wide range of tasks including greenhouse cleaning (power washing and sanitizing), pot filling and seasonal maintenance activities (flower bed design/upkeep, snow removal and lawn cutting)
Communicate and collaborate with other greenhouse stakeholders to improve plant health and streamline processes within the research environment
Prioritize safety at the Georgetown site by becoming lead for several Corteva safety standards (examples include Pesticide safety, Fall Protection and Isolation of Energy), complying with requirements of all applicable Corteva safety standards and maintaining/using personal protective equipment
Improve processes and equipment to increase productivity, reduce operating costs or promote sustainability (recent examples include installation and use of an EllePot Multiflex machine, implementation of a plastic recycling program, and investigations into alternate fertilizer sources)
Participate in virtual or in-person conferences, trade shows and seminars (examples include the Canadian Greenhouse Conference, Cultivate, and the Corteva Controlled Environment Conference)
What Skills You Need:
University or college degree in Agriculture/Agriscience, Biology, Earth Science, Ecology, Environmental Science/Studies, Horticulture, Microbiology, Plant Science, One Health, or related field.
Greenhouse experience is considered an asset
Forklift and Grower Pesticide License are considered assets and must be obtained within 90 days of start date
Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 lbs
Ability to conduct physically demanding work in adverse conditions (extreme heat and cold)
G Driver’s license
Willingness to obtain additional certifications
Proficiency with MS Office Suite
Strong communication and collaboration skills
