UPMC East is currently hiring a casual Histotechnoloigst to work a daylight shift (either 5 am to 1:30 pm or 5:30 am to 2 pm), Monday thru Friday.

**Purpose:**
Process and prepare specialized tissue samples per competency guidelines for this level in a clinical laboratory. In addition, monitor level and quality of work performed by others. Evaluate new procedures, techniques and tools. Resolve problems that impact test results.
**Responsibilities:**
+ Demonstrates progression of skills towards working independently in an advanced staining area.
+ Supports academic mission of department.
+ Demonstrate complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.
+ Maintain instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
+ Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, stocking supplies.
+ Perform QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining
+ Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label in order to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
+ Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols.
+ Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.
+ Completion of the educational requirements needed in order to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP);
+ B.S. degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years, or a B.S.degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years. Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist.
+ 1 year of full time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.
**Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**
+ HTL (ASCP)- Am Society Clinical Pathology required within 1 year of hire. New York License required for NY locations.
+ American Society for Clinical Pathology
