Job Description

Job Summary 

The Histology Technologist processes and prepares histological specimens for diagnostic evaluation. This role performs tissue embedding, microtomy, and staining using routine, special, and immunohistochemical techniques. The Histology Technologist ensures accurate slide preparation for pathologist review, maintains laboratory equipment and supplies, and follows quality control and safety protocols to support diagnostic pathology services. 

Essential Functions

Prepares and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by embedding, sectioning, and staining using appropriate histological techniques. Operates and maintains complex laboratory equipment and instruments used for histology procedures. Performs special stains and immunohistochemical testing as required for diagnostic purposes. Reviews stained slides and controls for accuracy and quality; adjusts procedures as needed. Performs data entry and labeling using the laboratory information system (LIS). Follows laboratory protocols and maintains required documentation for quality assurance and regulatory compliance. Maintains inventory, orders supplies, and ensures proper storage and disposal of specimens and biological waste. Assists in ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and participates in quality improvement activities. Adheres to safety protocols and infection control procedures in the laboratory environment. Performs other duties as assigned. Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Biological Science, or related field required to qualify for HT certification required Completion of an accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program preferred 1-2 years of experience in a clinical histology laboratory preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of histology techniques, staining protocols, and laboratory procedures. Skill in operating histology laboratory equipment with accuracy and precision. Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workloads, and work effectively under pressure. Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work standards. Strong communication and teamwork skills in a collaborative clinical environment. Proficiency with laboratory information systems and electronic documentation.

Licenses and Certifications

HTL - Histo Technologist issued by ASCP required State license where applicable (CA, FL, GA, HI, LA, MT, NV, NY, ND, RI, WV) required
