Head of Software Delivery

Thales Underwater Systems provide a unique opportunity for you to support creation of software that delivers a state of the art Sonar capability for UK and International Navies. We develop our systems for a wide range of significant defence projects, including the Astute class submarines, Merlin helicopters, Type 23 frigates and the Hunt class mine countermeasures vessel. As a Thales Maritime Mission Systems software engineer, you will develop the next-generation of Sonar technologies, for which we are world-renowned.

You will be a key member of the Software Development team based at one of the UWS UK Thales sites, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with Thales sites in the UK and overseas.

This role will report directly to the Head of Software and is accountable to deliver all surface ship software bids and work packages. The role will ensure that demand for resource is coherent and work with the Head of Software to ensure that supply of resource is appropriate. The role will ensure that our deliveries are made in line with the SDP and appropriately tailored Chorus practices. The role will work across our UK sites.

It is essential to collaborate with peers working to deliver software to other business lines.

Purpose of the job

The job holder manages the Software Engineering activities of multidisciplinary teams working on solutions of managed complexity (single or multi-domains/products, multi-site).

His/her responsibility covers an area at the level of a UWS Business Line. His/her main responsibility is to lead and develop the teams in order to deliver, at the best cost, the development of engineering solutions for projects.

The job holder deploys within his/her scope of activity the departments transformation strategy and associated competitiveness plan.

He/She is there to drive the maturity of the organization, the goals of the digital transformation of the software discipline, and the attractiveness, anticipation, and skills development that will help promote the Group’s operational excellence and facilitate project execution.

Description of major activities

 In the complex environment of the solutions covered and his/her scope of responsibility, the job holder is required to:

Lead and develop multidisciplinary teams in the execution of the development of Software Engineering solutions. Guarantee the quality of solutions provided to customers.

Deploy the departments Engineering Transformation and Competitiveness Plan (make or buy strategy, footprint) and report to the Operational Management of his/her entity (N+1) on the performance plan and competitiveness strategy through the key indicators, progress and results of the Engineering Division (cost, time, quality)

Deploy the maturity improvement strategy of the organization based on the established operating model (processes, practices, tools, organization and governance, skills)

Define and deploy new practices and/or tools to maintain teams at the state-of-the-art level of their discipline/activities to ensure operational excellence.

Promote innovation within projects, in collaboration with the Technical Department of his/her scope and in line with project management requirements

Deploy the digital transformation (automation of digital processes, technologies, and architectures (micro services), and digital continuity throughout the life cycle of projects, etc.) including the cultural transformation

Ensure the coherency of demand for resources for the staffing of projects and associated skills through a process of anticipation and management of skills, promote diversity and inclusion within teams, and develop the skills of employees through the promotion of a corporate learning culture

Contribute to Group processes such as the consolidation of multi-year budgets (MYB)

 Ensure compliance with the provisions of the Code of Ethics and the Code of Conduct within the framework of the duties/responsibilities set out above

Professional Knowledge and Experience

The job requires a degree from an engineering school (Electronics, Aerospace, Computer Science, etc.) or a Master 2 degree (BAC+5) or higher (e.g. PhD).

The job holder must have significant experience in the management of teams working on the development of complex engineering solutions and requires a high level of understanding of the environment in which he/she operates (operational development processes, products).

The job holder must demonstrate the ability to: Manage and develop teams Share a vision Deploy a strategy to foster competitiveness and improve organizational performance and maturity (engineering fundamentals and skills)

Define needs and capitalize and estimate costs to ensure engineering projects are well managed in line with time, cost, and quality requirements while maintaining a clear vision in terms of risks and opportunities

Coordinate and manage resources between different sites Understand data and business issues Synthesis skills

Simplify complexity and develop a helicopter view (macro and micro) Knowledge of the rules set forth by Thales regarding the prevention of corruption and influence peddling

Security Level

Full SC level + Sole UK National
