Head of Oncology Operations

The Head of Oncology Services will serve as the senior operations leader for our clinical laboratory and customer excellence teams, with a close connection to commercial counterparts, overseeing laboratory operations, clinical review, patient & client services, and Oncology R&D. This leader will collaborate closely with the diagnostics leadership team—including commercial, regulatory, quality, strategic planning, and HR—to achieve business objectives and deliver exceptional clinical value. The role will also partner with corporate functions, such as global IT, to ensure effective and efficient expansion of laboratory capabilities and infrastructure in line with business growth and increasing test volumes.

In this fully onsite-based role in San Diego, CA, this individual will be responsible for building and sustaining a high-performing, engaged team and fostering a culture of operational excellence and patient-centric service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide strategic and operational leadership for all aspects of laboratory operations, clinical review, patient & client services, and Oncology R&D. Develop and execute strategic plans to industrialize and scale laboratory operations to meet growing commercial demand. Strategic plans should incorporate progressing integration within Hologic and aligning synergies within the organization. Manage financial performance, budgeting, and resource planning for all clinical laboratory departments and supporting functions. Establish and monitor key business metrics and implement lean practices to ensure operational targets are met. Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing team, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, collaboration, and clinical excellence. Lead recruitment, retention, training, and performance management for laboratory staff and supporting functions. Establish a culture of teamwork, continuous improvement, and accountability. Develop and implement scalable operational processes to support business growth and innovation. Ensure compliance with all regulatory, accreditation, and quality requirements (e.g., CLIA, CAP, FDA, state regulations). Partner with Quality and Regulatory teams to maintain a robust Quality Management System (QMS). Facilitate integration with Hologic systems. Collaborate with technical supervisors and laboratory management to ensure appropriately qualified personnel conduct testing and maintain competency. Troubleshoot operational and technical issues, working closely with internal teams, vendors, clients, and commercial partners. Act as a primary liaison between Oncology Services and other departments within the organization. Drive cross-functional initiatives to optimize workflows, implement best practices, and integrate new technologies. Champion a relentless focus on patient care, client satisfaction, and clinical value creation.

Qualifications 

Domain knowledge: Strong technical knowledge of molecular biology and molecular testing laboratory practices (CLIA, CAP, etc.). Proven, dynamic leader with strong interpersonal and management skills who can work effectively at all levels of an organization and deliver results. Organizational Intelligence: Expert in navigating organizational structures and cultures, building influence through both formal and informal networks, and effectively managing complexity to achieve business objectives. Preferred: Licensed California Clinical Laboratory scientist (meets California Department of Public Health/CLIA requirements for licensure for high complexity testing). Preferred: Experience in IT implementation and project management

Education 

BA/BS with minimum of 15 years industry experience  Masters degree preferred with minimum 12 years industry experience PhD degree with minimum 10 years industry experience

Management Experience             

Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience in driving successful growth in complex organizations Minimum of (8+) years of management experience, leading teams of 20 or more.

The annualized base salary range for this role is $198,100 to $352,200 and is bonus eligible. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on factors including relevant experience, skillset, knowledge, geography, education, business needs, and market demand.
