Summary of Position At Falvey Insurance Group, the Head of Ocean Marine Claims plays a key role in upholding our commitment to delivering exceptional claims service across our specialized lines of business. This role involves independently managing complex claims across multiple jurisdictions, with a focus on accuracy, efficiency, and providing outstanding experience for all stakeholders, particularly within Hull and Marine Liabilities. This position operates with advanced authority and is empowered to engage and oversee independent vendors or experts, ensuring alignment with Falvey’s high standards and strategic objectives. Position Functions The Head of Ocean Marine Claims duties will include:
+ Management of assigned claims book including intake, processing, adjustment, and settlement of the claims through:
+ Understanding and interpreting the policy to determine applicable coverage and the cause and extent of loss within effective policy periods.
+ Setting accurate reserves within specific authority limits or make recommendations for adjusting reserves as necessary and appropriate.
+ Determine and utilize third party resources for needed claims investigations.
+ Maintain organized and detailed claim files within internal database systems.
+ Conduct thorough investigations, evaluate damages and negotiate fair settlements and ensure accuracy of documentation and information related to each claim
+ Understands and applies salvage and subrogation processes to assist internal and external legal departments with the recovery process
+ The overall process management and oversight of an assigned Claims group:
+ Monitor claim adjusters’ daily workload to assist in balanced workload for department staff. Re-assign claims amongst team members as needed.
+ Conduct minimum weekly meetings to convey information to team members as well as reporting meeting feedback to department management.
+ Monitor existing productivity measurements for claim adjusters’ daily/weekly/monthly performance, through use of Domo.
+ Establish new measurements as needed. Take corrective action with claims staff when and if needed.
+ Establish, implement, and monitor both quantitative and qualitative quality control measurements
+ Pre-approve team members’ RORs, Denials, and LLRs before AVP Claims and/or VP Claims review
+ Prepare and meet with assigned group for semi-annual and annual reviews
+ Creation and management of written training procedures and manual for claims training and reference including but not limited to claim handling, adjustment, and department procedures.
+ Attend and participate in weekly Team Lead/AVP Claims meetings
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities The Head of Ocean Marine Claims should have an advanced understanding of insurance issues, be customer service oriented, and demonstrate the ability to share knowledge and work effectively in a team environment. The candidate must uphold confidentiality and compliance with all regulatory and internal systems.
Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to interact with all levels of company staff including management, underwriting, marketing and legal departments with a customer service focus on internal and external customers. Organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.
Must be able to evaluate coverage decisions for claims based upon the documents, surveyor's investigative reports and applicable marine insurance policy. Other Requirements
+ A degree or certificate in any related business field or equivalent industry experience.
+ 5 years of experience as a Claims Associate, or similar role, is required. Familiarity with Ocean Marine Lines is a pre-requisite.
+ An active adjuster’s license and non-resident licenses is required If you do not have one it will be required to obtain one within a year of employment.
+ Also, a willingness to complete continuing education courses in the insurance field.
Physical Requirements Must be able to sit and operate a computer; answer and communicate on a telephone; operate copy machine. Supervisory Responsibilities Yes Equipment Used Computer, telephone, copy machine, scanner. Hours of Operation and Working Conditions This position’s work hours are Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm, in a business-casual office environment. We currently operate in a hybrid capacity with 3 days in the office, Wednesday and Thursday are required and 2 days at home. This position requires occasional flexibility for working additional hours to accomplish project objectives. Occasional business travel may be required.
